Anthropic requires registered investment advisers to buy at least 20 seats of its Claude Enterprise plan to use Claude for Financial Advisors, a floor that costs $4,800 a year before usage fees. That minimum fits only a fraction of the 16,000 RIA firms Charles Schwab cited when it announced its exclusive custodian partnership with Anthropic on Sept. 14, according to RIABiz.
Schwab has disclosed that 11,000 of those firms manage less than $100 million in assets. RIABiz estimates the bundle, as priced, suits about 3,000 of Schwab's RIAs. Anthropic's website lists the Enterprise plan at $20 per user per month on an annual basis, with a 20-seat minimum and usage billed separately at API rates.
The minimum was spelled out during a Claude webinar for RIAs, where Anthropic go-to-market executive Drew Parker told attendees that firms wanting access would need to purchase 20 seats to begin with. Parker said the company was looking at whether that threshold could come down.
“I'm working to see if there is something that we can do to potentially lower the seat count for the enterprise plan”— Drew Parker, Go-to-market executive at Anthropic

For now, it will not. Parker said there is currently no path to a smaller enterprise purchase and that Anthropic would revisit the question longer term. Anthropic sells a cheaper Team plan, but it recommends Enterprise for registered investment advisers. Wealth.com co-founder Danny Lohrfink, whose estate-planning platform is an initial Claude for Financial Advisors partner, said in September that Anthropic steers advisors toward enterprise plans because they add a layer of data privacy and security.
Schwab's own rollout is staged. CEO Rick Wurster described the Claude work as a pilot on a Wall Street call, with expansion planned over the coming months.
“We've started the pilot with Claude and will expand to additional clients and LLMs in the coming months”— Rick Wurster, CEO of Charles Schwab
Schwab had not responded to RIABiz's question about whether it was caught off guard by the minimum or might subsidize smaller firms. A source told RIABiz that Schwab's announcement was rushed because Anthropic named all of its charter partners in a single release. The timing is tight for Schwab: its IMPACT 2026 conference opens Tuesday in Boston.
The cost question surfaced before the seat floor was made explicit. In September, Aaron Steinberg, a former LPL senior vice president who now runs AI consulting firm ThrivAI, estimated that a 10-advisor RIA paying $70 to $120 per user per month would spend $8,400 to $14,400 a year, excluding setup, training and staff time. Tyrone Ross, CEO of RIA 401 Financial, said a lack of enterprise access would be the sticking point for smaller advisors.
Rival custodian Altruist launched its own AI tool, Hazel, in February, and Schwab shares fell from about $105 afterward; they closed under $91 on Friday. Altruist CEO Jason Wenk said many advisors will be underwhelmed once they realize Schwab's integration is a read-only experience. Tim Welsh, president of Nexus Strategy, said that with a read-only connector, Claude can look but not act.
Joel Bruckenstein, producer of the T3 advisor technology conferences, said the deal was done primarily to satisfy Schwab's large RIAs. Parker's guidance stands for everyone else: firms that want Claude for Financial Advisors today need to buy 20 seats.
