Anthropic signs $10B cloud deal with Volta for Norway data center

The six-year contract sends Claude compute to a 133 MW Nvidia Vera Rubin facility built with crypto miner Bitdeer.

Anthropic has signed a $10 billion, six-year cloud compute deal with Volta, an AI cloud startup founded earlier this year and valued at $2.4 billion. Bloomberg first reported the agreement, which routes Claude workloads through a new 133 megawatt data center in Norway. Volta will co-develop that facility with Bitdeer, a crypto-mining company pivoting into AI infrastructure buildout.

The Norway site will run on Nvidia's Vera Rubin systems, the chipmaker's newest AI architecture and the successor generation to Blackwell. Volta is a member of Nvidia's Cloud Partner program, the consortium of GPU-based cloud providers Nvidia has been steering compute allocation toward as demand outstrips supply. For a company that did not exist a year ago, $10 billion in booked revenue on a single contract is an unusually steep ramp.

Volta had previously discussed a large AI-lab customer without naming it. The Anthropic disclosure resolves that, and it fits a pattern: the Claude maker has been signing compute agreements at a rapid clip as it competes with OpenAI and Google for training and inference capacity. Recent deals include arrangements with SpaceX and Amazon, and last month AMD committed up to $5 billion to Anthropic in a 2-gigawatt chip supply agreement that AI Chat Daily covered.

Key facts

  • 01Anthropic signed a $10 billion, six-year cloud compute deal with Volta, a startup founded earlier this year.
  • 02The compute will run out of a 133 megawatt data center in Norway, co-developed with crypto miner Bitdeer.
  • 03The facility will be powered by Nvidia's Vera Rubin systems, the chipmaker's newest AI architecture.
  • 04Volta is valued at $2.4 billion and is part of Nvidia's Cloud Partner program.
  • 05The deal follows recent Anthropic compute agreements with SpaceX and Amazon.

The Bitdeer piece of the arrangement is worth pausing on. Crypto miners have spent the past two years repositioning shuttered or underutilized mining sites into AI data centers, trading on their existing power interconnects, cooling infrastructure, and land. A 133 megawatt facility sits at the upper end of what a mining operator can convert without a full ground-up rebuild, and Norway's cold climate and hydroelectric grid make it one of the more efficient European locations for high-density GPU compute.

For Anthropic, the strategic logic is diversification. The company already leans heavily on Amazon Web Services under a multi-billion-dollar strategic investment, and it uses Google Cloud as a second anchor. Layering Volta, SpaceX-adjacent capacity, and other Nvidia Cloud Partner providers on top of the hyperscalers spreads training and inference across more physical sites and reduces the risk that any single provider becomes a bottleneck during a model launch or usage spike.

The economics of the deal also tell a story about pricing power in AI compute. A $10 billion, six-year commitment for 133 megawatts works out to roughly $12.5 million per megawatt per year, before accounting for Vera Rubin's per-chip pricing premium. That is a rich number by traditional colocation standards, and it reflects both the scarcity of Nvidia's newest silicon and the willingness of frontier labs to lock in supply years in advance.

Volta's $2.4 billion valuation is the other eye-catching figure. New GPU cloud specialists — CoreWeave, Lambda, Nebius, and now Volta — have been marked up aggressively on the strength of contracted revenue with named AI labs. A single anchor tenant with a multi-year commitment can underwrite the debt financing needed to build out the next tranche of capacity, which in turn justifies the next equity round. The model works as long as the anchor tenant keeps paying.

That is where the caveat sits. Six-year compute contracts written today assume that today's model economics still hold in 2032. If inference costs collapse faster than expected, or if a new chip generation makes Vera Rubin systems uncompetitive on a performance-per-dollar basis before the contract expires, either Anthropic or Volta will end up on the wrong side of the trade. Neither side has commented publicly on the pricing structure or any renegotiation clauses, and Bitdeer's role as data center developer rather than operator adds another counterparty to the stack.

The Anthropic-Volta contract is another data point in the story of 2026's compute buildout: frontier labs are willing to sign nine- and ten-figure commitments with startups that did not exist eighteen months ago, provided those startups can put Nvidia silicon in a building with power. That shifts leverage away from the hyperscalers, toward Nvidia and toward whoever can move fastest on siting and interconnects. Bitdeer's involvement suggests the next wave of AI capacity will come from operators the traditional cloud market did not see coming, and Anthropic is betting $10 billion that they can deliver.
