The company calls Solara "a new platform built from the ground up to power agent-driven experiences." Underneath, it is a Microsoft-tuned Android fork branded the Microsoft Device Ecosystem Platform, chosen, per Microsoft, to "run on smaller, lower-power devices while keeping the management and security features IT departments expect." That framing — low-power silicon plus enterprise device management — is the actual product thesis.

Microsoft demonstrated two reference designs. The first is a desk device that resembles an Amazon Echo Show, unlocks via facial recognition, and surfaces AI agents as the primary interface. The second is a wearable badge of the type employees use to enter office buildings, fitted with a camera and a fingerprint scanner; a single press wakes an agent, and Microsoft showed it tapping into a live conversation, transcribing it on the fly, and using the camera to see what the wearer sees.

Microsoft is not planning to manufacture either device. Windows does not run well on the kind of small, battery-constrained, always-listening hardware that agent gadgets need, and Microsoft has spent years failing to shrink it for that envelope. Android already has the driver ecosystem, the chip support across Qualcomm and others, and the power profile. Bolting Microsoft's identity, Intune-style management, and security stack on top is a faster path than rebuilding from the Windows kernel.
Solara also slots into a broader Microsoft push at Build this week. The company unveiled MAI-Thinking-1, its first in-house reasoning model, and shipped an Agent Control Specification meant to govern how agents behave across apps and devices. It launched Scout, an always-on personal assistant, and rolled out a unified agentic stack with Nvidia spanning Windows, Azure, and on-prem. Solara is the hardware-platform leg of that same strategy: own the model, own the agent runtime, own the device OS.
The competitive context is unmissable. Google is pushing Gemini-powered devices, including the Gemini Spark agent unveiled this week. Meta is building agent-aware hardware on top of its smart-glasses line. OpenAI is developing dedicated devices in partnership with Jony Ive, and earlier this month invested $40M into hardware startup Opal at a $275M valuation. Microsoft is the last of the four hyperscalers to commit publicly to an agent-device platform, and Solara is its answer.
The work is early. Microsoft did not announce a shipping date, a partner manufacturer, pricing, or which specific silicon Solara will run on at launch. Pilots with AccuWeather, Best Buy, CVS, and Target will determine whether the reference designs translate into products anyone actually buys, and the enterprise badge use case in particular runs straight into privacy questions about always-on cameras and microphones in the workplace. Microsoft has not detailed how Solara handles on-device versus cloud inference, or which agents — its own MAI models, OpenAI's, or third parties — run natively.
Solara is Microsoft's bet that the next computing form factor is not a PC, a phone, or a headset, but a category of small, cheap, agent-mediated devices scattered across desks, lobbies, and lanyards. Picking Android over Windows is a tacit admission that Windows is not the platform for that future, and that the OS layer matters less than owning the agent runtime and the enterprise management plane that sits on top. If pilots convert, Microsoft becomes the default OS for a hardware category that does not yet exist; if they don't, it has spent a Build keynote slot and a reference-design budget on a thesis Google, Meta, and OpenAI are all pursuing harder.
