Ode with Anthropic bets forward-deployed engineers replace consulting armies

Founders Chris Taylor and Eddie Siegel argue a handful of AI-native engineers can out-deliver traditional integrators on enterprise deployments.

Ode with Anthropic, the enterprise AI services venture launched by Anthropic, Blackstone, Hellman & Friedman and Goldman Sachs, is pitching itself as the fix for stalled enterprise AI pilots — with a small bench of forward-deployed engineers rather than a traditional consulting army. In a new Equity podcast interview, Ode's leaders Chris Taylor and Eddie Siegel laid out the thesis: AI-native services are about to become one of the biggest categories in tech, and the incumbents built for the last technology cycle are the wrong tool for this one.

Ode's operating core came together earlier this year, when the venture acquired Fractional AI, the applied AI services startup Taylor and Siegel founded. Fractional AI's model — embedding engineers directly inside client firms to ship production systems on top of frontier models — is now the template Ode is scaling with the balance sheets of its backers behind it. Blackstone, Hellman & Friedman and Goldman Sachs give the venture something no pure services shop typically has: access to the portfolio companies of some of the largest private-capital pools in the world.

The problem Ode is chasing is well-documented across the enterprise. Companies buy access to Claude, GPT-class models or Gemini, run a proof-of-concept, then stall out before anything reaches production. Compliance, data plumbing, evaluation, monitoring and integration with existing systems eat the timeline. Taylor and Siegel argue that this is not a model problem — it's an implementation problem, and the market for solving it is enormous.

Can a handful of engineers really do the work of an army of consultants?

Key facts

  • 01Ode with Anthropic is backed by Anthropic, Blackstone, Hellman & Friedman and Goldman Sachs.
  • 02Ode acquired applied AI services startup Fractional AI earlier this year to serve as its operating core.
  • 03Co-founders Chris Taylor and Eddie Siegel now lead Ode after building Fractional AI.
  • 04The venture's thesis: AI-native services will be one of the largest new categories in enterprise tech.
  • 05Ode targets the gap between enterprise AI pilots and production deployments that most firms fail to cross.

The bet on forward-deployed engineers echoes a pattern that has quietly become the dominant AI-services playbook. Anthropic itself, OpenAI and Palantir have all built teams of engineers who sit inside customer environments and ship code rather than PowerPoints. Ode is the first attempt to industrialize that motion as a standalone business, with a frontier-model lab and multiple private-equity firms on the cap table.

The economic case is straightforward. Traditional systems integrators bill armies of consultants for multi-year transformation programs; the deliverable is usually a strategy deck and a slow rollout. An AI-native services firm sells outcomes shipped in weeks, at higher gross margins per engineer, because the leverage comes from the model. If that math holds, the addressable spend Ode is targeting — the global IT services market — is measured in the hundreds of billions annually.

Whether Ode can convert that theoretical margin into a scaled business is the open question. Forward-deployed engineering is hard to hire for, harder to retain, and does not compound the way pure software does. Every engagement burns senior talent, and the industry has yet to prove that AI tooling reduces the headcount required per client at the pace the pitch decks assume. Ode will need to show that its engineers deliver measurably faster than the McKinseys, Accentures and Deloittes they are displacing.

The lineup of backers signals how seriously private capital is treating the implementation layer. Blackstone and Hellman & Friedman are among the largest buyout firms in the world; Goldman Sachs is one of the most active AI infrastructure lenders. Their portfolios collectively span thousands of companies across financial services, healthcare, industrials and consumer — a captive top of funnel for Ode if the delivery model works.

Anthropic's role is the strategic wrinkle. Model providers have historically kept services at arm's length, wary of competing with the system integrators that resell their capacity. By anchoring Ode, Anthropic is signaling that it views deep implementation as the choke point on Claude adoption, not an adjacency to be outsourced. It also gives Anthropic a distribution channel that OpenAI, backed more heavily by Microsoft's field sales motion, has approached differently.

The near-term test for Ode is production references. Enterprise buyers will not commit to a new services model on the strength of a podcast appearance; they will want case studies with named logos, measurable ROI and repeatable playbooks. Taylor and Siegel's background running Fractional AI gives them a starting portfolio, but scaling from a boutique to a firm capable of consuming Blackstone-portfolio-sized engagements is a different exercise entirely.

If Ode's thesis is right — that implementation, not model access, is where the next trillion-dollar AI business gets built — the traditional consulting industry has a structural problem that no amount of internal AI upskilling will solve. If it is wrong, Ode becomes another well-funded services boutique in a market that already has hundreds of them. The interesting part is that the same investors who fund the incumbents are now funding the disruptor, which suggests they have concluded the incumbents cannot pivot fast enough on their own.
