OpenAI's first major hardware product will be a ChatGPT smart speaker, according to a Bloomberg report published July 14, 2026, with a launch targeted for 2027. The device will ship without a screen, relying on a camera and additional sensors to interpret the user's environment, and it will run GPT-Live, the upgraded voice model OpenAI unveiled last week. It is the clearest signal yet that OpenAI intends to be a device company, not just a model provider.
The speaker is one of roughly five products in an OpenAI hardware lineup being developed with former Apple designer Jony Ive, following OpenAI's roughly $6.5 billion acquisition of Ive's design company, io Products. Bloomberg's sources describe a rechargeable, portable form factor that handles smart home controls, media playback, questions, and messaging — the standard smart-speaker feature set, executed with a camera and OpenAI's own voice stack.
The device will also incorporate what Bloomberg describes as mechanical elements that can move on their own, meant to give the speaker a more humanlike presence. That points to a product closer to an animated companion object than to an Amazon Echo puck — a design direction consistent with the more emotive hardware Ive is known for.

The report lines up with earlier reporting in February that described a similar camera-equipped OpenAI device capable of recognizing objects and people nearby. What has firmed up since then is the product category (a speaker), the software (GPT-Live), and the release window (2027).
OpenAI is also releasing a smaller piece of hardware much sooner. The Codex Micro, a Codex-branded gadget built in partnership with Work Louder, is scheduled to ship on July 15th — one day after the Bloomberg report. That gives OpenAI a small, developer-facing hardware presence in market roughly two years before the flagship speaker arrives.
The timing of the smart-speaker leak is awkward. It surfaced days after Apple filed a lawsuit against OpenAI accusing the company of stealing hardware secrets, a case that names Ive's team indirectly by targeting the design pipeline OpenAI acquired. OpenAI responded on Tuesday, saying it is "not aware of any evidence that this complaint has merit." Apple's suit alleges the opposite; the case is at the filing stage and no ruling has been issued.
For OpenAI, the speaker represents a bet that voice, not chat, is the natural interface for a general-purpose AI assistant once latency and reasoning are good enough. GPT-Live is the software half of that bet. A screenless, always-listening device with a camera is the hardware half. The pitch is that a model that can see, hear, and speak in real time doesn't need a phone screen as its primary surface.
The obvious counterweight is that the smart-speaker category has been commercially disappointing for the incumbents. Amazon's Alexa business has struggled to turn Echo installs into meaningful profit, and Google's Nest line has shrunk rather than expanded. A camera-equipped, mobile-capable device also invites privacy scrutiny that static kitchen-counter speakers largely avoided. And a 2027 launch date leaves 18 months for competitors — including Apple, which is now openly adversarial — to ship their own AI-first hardware first.
The strategic read is that OpenAI is trying to own the full stack before it becomes commoditized. Selling API access to Microsoft, Anthropic-style enterprise deals, and consumer ChatGPT subscriptions all leave OpenAI dependent on someone else's device to reach the user. A five-product hardware lineup designed by Ive, powered by OpenAI's own voice and vision models, is the company's answer to that dependency — and its most direct challenge yet to Apple, which is why the timing of Cupertino's lawsuit is not a coincidence.
