Investors deployed roughly $300 billion into startups globally in the first quarter of 2026, a 150% increase over the prior quarter and the largest single-quarter total ever recorded, according to data from Crunchbase and PitchBook reviewed by AI Chat Daily. Four of the five largest venture rounds in history closed inside the window: OpenAI's $122 billion raise at an $852 billion valuation, Anthropic's $30 billion at $380 billion, xAI's $20 billion, and Waymo's $16 billion.
AI companies took approximately $242 billion of the total — about 80 cents on every venture dollar. The concentration is unusual even by recent standards. In Q1 2025, AI accounted for roughly 55% of all venture funding; in Q1 2024, it was closer to 40%.
The non-AI story is, on closer reading, also an AI story. Shield AI's $1.5 billion Series G in defense autonomy, Halter's $220 million Series E in animal-wearable AI, and the flood of capital into energy infrastructure all trace back to the same cycle of compute demand and agentic deployment.

Not everyone thinks this ends well. At a closed-door panel in Menlo Park last week, two Tier 1 partners told an audience of LPs that the concentration of capital at the top of the stack is 'setting up a vintage that will be judged harshly in 2029.' That judgment, of course, depends on whether the underlying models continue to compound returns on capital in the way their balance sheets currently imply.
