Sandstone raises $30M to bring AI to in-house legal teams

Sandstone has raised a $30 million Series A to build AI workflow software for in-house corporate legal teams, the startup announced Tuesday. Lightspeed Venture Partners led the round, with Sequoia, Mantis VC, SV Angel, Operator Partners, Kearny Jackson, Daybreak Ventures, and Litquidity Ventures also participating. The financing arrives just six months after a $10 million seed round in January led by Sequoia, a pace that signals investor conviction in the underserved slice of the legal market Sandstone is targeting.

The pitch is deliberately narrow. While Harvey and Legora have raised eight-figure rounds to sell legal reasoning tools into private practice, Sandstone is going after the legal departments inside small and mid-sized businesses — a buyer profile that handles a messier, more fragmented workload than outside counsel. Those teams field requests across Slack, email, and Jira tickets, then move between contract drafting, vendor review, and ad hoc legal analysis with no unified system underneath.

Co-founder and chief operating officer Jarryd Strydom described the daily reality for in-house lawyers, framing the problem as one of fractured intake rather than missing intelligence.

Key facts

  • 01Sandstone raised a $30M Series A led by Lightspeed Venture Partners, announced Tuesday.
  • 02The round lands six months after a $10M seed in January led by Sequoia.
  • 03Sandstone targets in-house legal teams at small and mid-sized businesses, not law firms.
  • 04The platform triages work from Slack, email, and Jira, then runs drafting and review workflows on top.
  • 05Anthropic expanded Claude for Legal in May with case law search and deposition prep tools.

Sandstone's platform sits on top of those intake channels, routes and triages incoming requests, and lets teams build custom workflows for drafting, reviewing, and producing legal analysis. The product has little in common with the legal reasoning engines aimed at law firms — instead, it leans toward relationship management and workflow automation tuned for corporate legal operations.

That distinction is what attracted Lightspeed, which has been increasingly active in vertical AI plays. The thesis is that horizontal foundation models hit a ceiling inside specialized professional workflows, and that the companies that win are the ones that encode domain-specific process knowledge into the product itself.

Strydom framed the bet directly when describing what closed the round.

Sandstone is moving into a crowded room. Harvey and Legora have already locked up significant share in the law-firm segment, and the frontier labs are pushing in from above. Anthropic expanded its Claude for Legal offering in May with new tools for case law search and deposition preparation, putting general-purpose model capabilities directly in front of legal buyers without a vertical wrapper. Sandstone's argument is that in-house teams need workflow infrastructure, not a smarter chatbot — and that the workflow layer is defensible in a way that prompts alone are not.

The six-month seed-to-Series A turnaround is the data point worth watching. Sequoia leading the $10 million seed in January and then following on into a $30 million round led by Lightspeed in June suggests early customer traction strong enough to justify a tripled raise without a full year of operating history. Vertical AI startups have been clearing that bar repeatedly in 2026, with funds racing to back the first credible product in each professional services niche before a frontier lab releases a general tool that absorbs the use case.

The risk is the same one facing every vertical AI company right now: the floor under specialized tools keeps moving as general models get better at domain tasks. Claude for Legal already covers a meaningful chunk of what a junior in-house lawyer does manually, and the gap will narrow. Sandstone's defensibility has to come from the integration layer — the Slack and Jira plumbing, the custom workflow builder, the institutional memory of how a specific company's legal team actually operates — rather than from any single AI capability.

In-house legal is one of the more attractive targets in enterprise AI because the buyer is sophisticated, the workload is high-volume, and the existing software stack is thin. If Sandstone can convert its early traction with mid-market customers into multi-seat deployments before Anthropic, OpenAI, or a Harvey-style competitor moves down-market to chase the same buyer, the $30 million raise buys it roughly the window it needs. The vertical AI playbook is becoming clear — own the workflow, not the model — and the next twelve months will show whether Sandstone can hold the line in a category where the frontier labs are visibly circling.
