Apple's camera-equipped AirPods have moved into the design validation test stage, with internal testers actively using prototypes ahead of an early mass-production trial, according to Bloomberg's Mark Gurman. Design validation sits one step before production validation, the final gate before a device ships to customers. Apple originally targeted a launch in the first half of 2026, but slipped the timeline after delays to its overhauled Siri, which Gurman now says is on track for September.
The cameras on the new AirPods are not built for photography. Gurman reports they capture "visual information in low resolution" that users can query Siri about — pointing the buds at ingredients on a counter and asking what to cook, for example, or feeding context into turn-by-turn directions. A small LED on the housing will indicate when visual data is being uploaded to the cloud.
Industrial design hews close to the AirPods Pro 3, which Apple announced and released in September 2025, but the stems are longer to accommodate the camera module. That makes the new model the first AirPods with an outward-facing sensor, and one of the first mainstream consumer wearables built specifically to feed an LLM-style assistant rather than capture media.
Key facts
- 01Apple testers are actively using camera-equipped AirPods prototypes in the design validation test stage, one step before production validation.
- 02The cameras capture low-resolution visual information for Siri queries rather than photos or video, per Bloomberg's Mark Gurman.
- 03A first-half 2026 launch was pushed back due to delays in the Siri overhaul, now on track for September.
- 04Apple is also developing smart glasses and an AI pendant for as soon as early 2027.
- 05The AirPods Pro 3, which the new model resembles, were announced and released in September 2025.
Tying the launch to the Siri overhaul is the more important detail. Apple has spent the better part of two years rebuilding Siri around generative AI and has missed multiple internal targets, a delay that already prompted the company to settle a $250 million claim from iPhone owners over undelivered AI Siri features. Shipping camera AirPods before Siri can actually answer visual questions would be pointless; shipping them alongside a working Siri is the entire pitch.
“The new AirPods will resemble the AirPods Pro 3 but with longer stems to house the camera hardware, plus a small LED to signal when visual data is being sent to the cloud.”— Jaeden Schafer
The competitive frame is Meta. Meta's Ray-Ban smart glasses have become the breakout AI hardware product of the past two years, and the company's Hypernova-class follow-ups are pushing the category toward always-on visual assistants. Apple does not yet have a glasses product on the market — Gurman says smart glasses and an AI pendant are slated for as early as 2027 — so camera AirPods are the company's first shot at a wearable that sees what the user sees.
OpenAI is the other competitor of note. The company is reportedly developing a dedicated AI device with Jony Ive, and a phone-class product has been telegraphed in press reports for months. Apple shipping camera AirPods in late 2026 would put a piece of AI hardware on hundreds of millions of ears before OpenAI's first device reaches a single customer.
The hardware question is whether low-resolution image capture is actually useful. Smart glasses get a wide forward field of view and a screen-adjacent vantage point. AirPods sit below the ear, angled outward — fine for pointing at a countertop, awkward for reading a sign across the street. Apple's pitch will rest on whether Siri can do enough with limited, oddly-framed visual input to make the feature feel like a default rather than a party trick.
Privacy is the other open issue. The LED indicator is a deliberate borrow from Apple's webcam and iPhone-camera design language, signaling to bystanders that a sensor is live. Whether a small light on the side of someone's ear reads as clearly as a green dot on a MacBook is a different question, and one regulators in the EU and California will likely have opinions about before launch.
There is also the matter of execution risk. Apple has already pushed this product once, and the Siri rebuild has slipped repeatedly — the September target is itself a revision. If Siri misses again, the AirPods either ship without their headline feature or slip with it. Neither outcome is good for a company that has spent the year defending its AI roadmap against the perception it is behind.
For Apple, camera AirPods are the cleanest way to put AI hardware on a body without asking customers to wear something new on their face. The AirPods franchise already moves tens of millions of units a year through an existing retail and accessory channel, and a camera-equipped SKU sold alongside the AirPods Pro 3 would reach Meta-glasses scale on day one. The bet is that ambient visual AI works better as an upgrade to a product people already wear than as a new category they have to be sold on — and that bet only pays off if Siri finally ships.
