Apple opens WWDC 2026 on Monday at 10 a.m. PT / 1 p.m. ET with a Siri rebuild that will lean on Google's Gemini technology, an AI agent integration tied to the App Store, and a Visual Intelligence mode inside the Camera app. The keynote streams on Apple's website, the Apple Developer app, and the Apple Developer YouTube channel. After two years of mixed reviews on Apple Intelligence, the company is using this conference to reset the narrative.
The conversational Siri is the centerpiece. Apple is positioning the assistant as context-aware, capable of multi-step tasks, and able to act across apps and services — closing the gap with ChatGPT, Claude, and Gemini. Bloomberg has reported a standalone Siri app aimed squarely at those chatbots, a product category Apple has avoided until now.
The Gemini dependency is the news inside the news. Apple, which spent the prior cycle insisting on on-device and first-party models for Apple Intelligence, is now routing parts of Siri through Google's stack. The arrangement extends the existing search partnership into the generative layer and concedes that Apple's own foundation models did not close the quality gap fast enough.
Key facts
- 01WWDC 2026 opens Monday at 10 a.m. PT / 1 p.m. ET, streamed via the Apple Developer app and YouTube channel.
- 02The headline reveal is a conversational Siri rebuild powered in part by Google Gemini, with a standalone Siri app aimed at ChatGPT and Claude.
- 03Apple is expected to introduce an AI agent integration tied to the App Store, letting agents book reservations, edit documents, and control smart home devices.
- 04A new Visual Intelligence mode inside the Camera app will sit alongside Photo, Video, Portrait, and Panorama, using Google Image Search to identify objects.
- 05Siri conversations will offer retention controls of 30 days, 1 year, or indefinitely, mirroring privacy patterns from messaging apps.
Privacy controls are part of the pitch. Users will reportedly be able to set Siri conversations to auto-delete after 30 days, after 1 year, or to keep them indefinitely — a retention model borrowed from messaging apps. That gives Apple a marketing line against ChatGPT and Gemini, which default to longer conversation retention unless users opt out.
The AI agent layer is the second major reveal, per The Information. Apple plans to integrate agents into the App Store, letting third parties build assistants that book reservations, edit documents, manage daily tasks, and control smart home devices. Details are thin, but the framing matters: agents in an App Store imply a review process, a distribution channel, and a revenue share — Apple's standard playbook applied to a category currently dominated by OpenAI and Anthropic distribution.
Inside the Camera app, a new Visual Intelligence section will take the slot previously assigned to the Camera Control button, sitting next to Photo, Video, Portrait, and Panorama. The feature uses Google Image Search to identify objects in frame, another Gemini-adjacent reliance. The Photos app gets Apple Intelligence enhancements including scene recommendations, automatic object removal, and natural-language photo edits.
Image Playground is being upgraded with higher-quality generation, more artistic styles, better character consistency, and a simplified "describe a change" editing flow. A suggested Genmoji feature would propose custom emojis based on user media and text. AI-generated wallpapers tuned to themes and moods are also on the roadmap. None of this is novel against what Google and OpenAI ship, but it tightens Apple's first-party creative stack inside iOS.
The Wallet app is getting a bill-splitting feature: photograph a receipt, and the app generates payment requests to the relevant parties. A "Create a Pass" option turns physical items like movie tickets and gym cards into digital passes. macOS, iPadOS, visionOS, watchOS, and tvOS are all expected to inherit the upgraded Siri and additional Apple Intelligence features, with stability fixes layered in.
The risk is execution. Apple announced an ambitious Siri overhaul at WWDC 2024 and then delayed the most impressive features by more than a year, a stumble that defined the second act of Apple Intelligence. A Gemini partnership outsources some of the model quality problem but introduces a new one — Apple is now dependent on a competitor's roadmap for a flagship feature, and any Gemini outage or policy change becomes Apple's problem.
For the broader AI market, Monday's keynote is the largest single distribution event of the year. Siri reaches more than a billion active devices, and any default routing into Gemini reshapes query volume in Google's favor at OpenAI's expense. The agent App Store, if it materializes with real revenue terms, gives Apple a chokepoint over how third-party AI reaches iPhone users — the same leverage that made the original App Store a $100B-plus business. The companies with the most to lose are the ones that built their consumer strategies around being the default chatbot on someone else's hardware.
