Firefighting drones tested in California and Alaska as fire season stretches year-round

Autonomous firefighting drones from Seneca and Dryad Networks completed live suppression trials in California and Alaska this summer, testing whether small aerial swarms can knock down wildfires before they scale. CAL FIRE ran a July 15, 2026 field test in which five Seneca drones worked together to deploy between 500 and 1,000 gallons of foam, while Dryad's Silvaguard system finished the $11 million XPRIZE Wildfire competition finals across a 1,000 square kilometer test area near Fairbanks in June 2026. The trials arrive as fire season lengthens into a near year-round hazard across much of the United States.

Seneca's Argo-1 drone carries up to 100 pounds of water or fire retardant and operates in swarms of four to six units. A human operator uploads a GPS waypoint, after which the drones fly autonomously, use onboard sensors to lock onto a fire's heat signature, and line up in sequence to spray the target. Fully loaded, each drone is limited to a 10-mile round trip at roughly 30 miles per hour.

The size constraint is deliberate. Each Argo-1 fits in the bed of a pickup with the tailgate down, and two people can carry an empty unit by hand — meaning crews can preposition them along ridgelines or drive them to a fire's edge rather than staging from a distant airfield. The CAL FIRE demonstration was organized with the nonprofit FireWERX and Seneca, which is making the drones commercially available starting in 2026. Seneca previously ran a demonstration for San Bernardino County Fire in December 2025.

Turnaround time is the metric Seneca is chasing hardest. The company told HeliOps Magazine it wants ground crews to be able to refill a returning drone's tank and swap in a charged battery inside a two-minute window, keeping the swarm in near-continuous rotation over an active fire.

Dryad Networks takes a different approach, pairing suppression drones with a detection network. The German company's Silvanet system uses solar-powered sensors bolted to trees, wired together through a wireless mesh network to an internet gateway. When a sensor picks up smoke from a smoldering fire, a prepositioned Silvaguard observation drone launches to confirm the fire's location with infrared and optical imaging and rule out false alarms.

Once the fire is confirmed, a Silvaguard suppression drone launches from a solar-powered spherical hangar pod and drops up to 26 gallons of fire suppressant on the target. That full chain — sensor to observation drone to suppression drone — ran end-to-end during the XPRIZE Wildfire finals outside Fairbanks, without human intervention triggering each stage.

The Aspen Fire Protection District in Colorado has already committed to a $5 million contract for five Seneca drones over five years, an early production deployment rather than a pilot. CAL FIRE has not signed a drone contract yet, but the agency represents a significant potential customer. It already operates the world's largest aerial firefighting fleet, with more than 70 crewed fixed-wing aircraft and helicopters, alongside AI-powered camera networks and its backing of the FireSat satellite constellation for space-based fire detection.

Neither drone system replaces a large airtanker. A single air tanker can drop thousands of gallons in one pass; an Argo-1 carries roughly 12 gallons of liquid per trip, and a Silvaguard suppression drone carries 26. The pitch instead is speed and cost per response — hitting a fire in its first minutes, when a few dozen gallons in the right place can end the incident, versus mobilizing helicopter crews after the fire has spread across acres.

The economics still have to be proven in a real deployment against a real fire. Prepositioning fleets across fire-prone terrain, maintaining solar-powered hangars, and staffing rapid-refill crews are non-trivial ongoing costs, and the 10-mile operational radius means agencies need dense coverage or forward staging to matter. Detection systems like Silvanet also have to sustain low false-positive rates over years in the field, or crews stop trusting the alerts.

The bet these systems represent is that early-stage fire response is a software and logistics problem, not an aircraft problem. If a sensor mesh and a swarm of pickup-truck-sized drones can consistently kill fires in the first hour, the economics of fire suppression shift meaningfully — fewer thousand-acre burns to fight, less demand on the crewed tanker fleet, lower insurance losses in the wildland-urban interface. CAL FIRE and Aspen are the first agencies whose contract lines will tell the market whether autonomous fire response graduates from demo to standing capability.
