The company said on Wednesday that roughly 360,000 customers reach out to its customer service department each year with exactly that question, a figure that captures how routinely Amazon's brand is impersonated in phishing attempts. The assistant checks a suspect message against the billions of messages Amazon has sent globally and returns a verdict on the spot.
The AI weighs sender information, content, timing, and message metadata to determine whether a communication actually originated from Amazon's systems. Fake order confirmations, Prime membership renewal alerts, account suspension warnings, package delivery notifications, and job scams are the dominant categories the company is trying to intercept. Each of those templates has a distinct rhythm and a distinct set of tells, and matching them against Amazon's own outbound corpus is a problem an LLM is well suited to solve.
Amazon said its AI can "definitively" confirm whether a communication originated from its own systems by checking it against the billions of messages Amazon has sent globally. That word choice matters. Scam-detection tools from most vendors return a probability score; Amazon is claiming a binary answer, which is only defensible when the reference corpus is the ground truth. That feedback loop is the standard shape of a fraud-detection pipeline, but bolting it onto a consumer-facing AI assistant lowers the effort required for a shopper to contribute a labeled example from a support ticket to a single voice or text query.
The feature builds on earlier scam-response work at Amazon. Earlier this year the company launched verify@amazon.com, an email address that anyone can forward a suspicious message to and receive a reply confirming whether it is authentic. An online form on Amazon's customer service site offers the same function. Moving that same capability into Alexa for Shopping removes the round trip: instead of forwarding an email and waiting, a shopper reads out or pastes the message and gets an answer inside the assistant they were already using.
The move also fits Amazon's broader repositioning of Alexa as a shopping-first assistant rather than a general-purpose voice product. Alexa for Shopping already sources personalized deals, creates shopping guides, helps customers reorder everyday items, offers AI product overviews, and transcribes handwritten shopping lists. Alexa for Shopping is available from both the Amazon website and the Amazon mobile app, which puts the check one query away from the checkout flow.
There are limits worth naming. A binary yes-or-no on authenticity depends on the message actually claiming to be from Amazon; a scam impersonating a shipper or a bank falls outside the reference corpus and outside the tool's remit. The system also has to earn user trust before shoppers will route ambiguous messages through it rather than deleting them outright, and adversaries will adapt their templates once they understand which signals the AI is weighting. Whether Amazon publishes hit-rate numbers over time will determine how much weight the "definitively" claim carries.
Retailers are one of the most heavily spoofed categories in phishing, and Amazon is the single most impersonated brand inside that category.
