Anthropic launched Claude Design on Apr 17, 2026, a new Anthropic Labs product that turns a conversation with Claude into prototypes, slides, one-pagers, and marketing collateral. The tool runs on Claude Opus 4.7, the company's most capable vision model, and is rolling out throughout the day as a research preview to Claude Pro, Max, Team, and Enterprise subscribers. Usage draws from existing subscription limits, with an option to extend via extra usage.

The pitch is a single surface that covers the full design loop: describe what you need, get a first version, then refine through inline comments, direct edits, or custom sliders that Claude itself generates. Exports run to Canva, PDF, PPTX, or standalone HTML, and finished work can be packaged into a handoff bundle for Claude Code with a single instruction. For Enterprise customers, the product is off by default and has to be switched on in Organization settings.

The headline proof point comes from Brilliant, the learning app. Senior Product Designer Olivia Xu said the company's most complex pages, which took 20+ prompts to recreate in other design tools, required only 2 prompts in Claude Design. She also credited the Claude Code handoff for making prototype-to-production transitions cleaner, a claim that matters because design-to-engineering friction is where most AI design tools collapse.

Key facts

  • 01Anthropic launched Claude Design on Apr 17, 2026 as a research preview inside Anthropic Labs.
  • 02The product is powered by Claude Opus 4.7 and ships to Claude Pro, Max, Team, and Enterprise subscribers.
  • 03Brilliant says complex pages that took 20+ prompts in other tools needed only 2 prompts in Claude Design.
  • 04Exports include Canva, PDF, PPTX, and standalone HTML, with a one-instruction handoff bundle for Claude Code.
  • 05Claude Design is off by default for Enterprise organizations; admins must enable it in Organization settings.

Datadog's Aneesh Kethini framed the speed gain differently. Work that used to take a week of briefs, mockups, and review rounds, he said, now happens in a single conversation, with outputs that stay true to Datadog's brand and design guidelines. That fidelity depends on an onboarding step where Claude reads a team's codebase and design files to build a reusable design system that gets applied automatically to every subsequent project.

Brilliant's senior product designer says pages that took 20+ prompts to recreate in other tools required just 2 prompts in Claude Design.

Canva is a launch partner rather than a competitor here. Co-founder and CEO Melanie Perkins said the two companies have been collaborating for a couple of years, and that Claude Design exports flow into Canva as fully editable, collaborative files. That framing — Claude for ideation, Canva for polish and publishing — is the commercial story Anthropic is telling designers who already live inside Canva's ecosystem.

Feature-wise, Claude Design covers realistic interactive prototypes without code review, product wireframes that hand off to Claude Code, design explorations, pitch decks, and what Anthropic calls frontier design: code-powered prototypes with voice, video, shaders, 3D, and built-in AI. Imports accept text prompts, DOCX, PPTX, XLSX, codebase pointers, and a web capture tool that pulls elements directly from a live website so prototypes match the real product.

Collaboration is scoped to the organization. Documents can stay private, be shared view-only across the org, or opened for edit access so multiple colleagues can modify a design and chat with Claude together in a group conversation. Anthropic said it will make Claude Design easier to integrate with other tools over the coming weeks, without naming specific partners beyond Canva and Claude Code.

The launch lands on top of a busy month for Anthropic. Claude Opus 4.7 went generally available recently with a 13% lift on coding benchmarks and 70% on CursorBench, and the company's run-rate revenue has been reported at $30B against an expanded Google and Broadcom TPU buildout. Claude Design is the first consumer-visible product that asks Opus 4.7 to do something other than write code or answer questions.

The obvious skepticism is that conversational design tools have a long history of demoing well and shipping poorly. Figma, Canva, and a wave of AI-native startups have all chased the prompt-to-prototype category, and enterprise designers tend to push back hard when generated output drifts from brand systems. Anthropic's codebase-aware design system is an answer to that, but the research preview framing signals the company knows this is a v1.

There's also a distribution question. Claude Design is gated to paid Anthropic plans and off by default for Enterprise, which limits the top-of-funnel compared with free-tier tools like Canva or ChatGPT's image and canvas features. Anthropic is betting that teams already standardizing on Claude for code and writing will pull the design workflow in behind them, rather than trying to win designers cold.

The read from here: Claude Design is less about replacing Figma and more about collapsing the gap between a product manager's idea and engineering-ready artifacts. If the Brilliant numbers hold at scale — 2 prompts instead of 20 — the value isn't prettier mockups, it's fewer meetings. That's the wedge Anthropic is pushing into, and it's a more defensible one than competing on visual polish against Canva.
