The Gemini foundation is the story. Siri's prior architecture leaned on extended knowledge lookups and a ChatGPT integration that never felt native. Swapping in Gemini gives Apple a frontier-class model without the internal cost of training one, and it lets Siri handle the sort of conversational, contextual queries users have spent three years running to ChatGPT or Gemini directly to answer.
The multi-step behavior is where the upgrade lands hardest. Siri can now take a prompt like 'find small or hidden features for iOS 27 and add them to a note' and execute it end-to-end, fetching content, summarizing, and writing to the correct app. It can draft a message referencing an email thread about a delivery, or pull funding data on a company whose website is open in Safari. On-screen context is the second unlock. Users can point Siri at a World Cup lineup and ask which player is oldest, have it read the current page aloud, or query a startup's site for competitor data without leaving the tab. The Camera app now accepts Siri queries too — point the phone at an unknown drink, and Siri will guess it's green juice, then narrow to Jaljeera or Aam Panna once told the setting is an Indian restaurant. Point it at a coffee bag and ask for brew instructions; point it at a menu and ask for recommendations.
Apple Intelligence powers the surrounding features. Shortcuts now accept natural-language creation prompts — 'Show me today's to-do items every morning at 8 a.m.' or 'convert photo to JPEG' — and users can layer complexity on top, chaining actions like 'convert selected photos to JPEG and share them through AirDrop.' Safari gains custom page-change alerts for pricing, blog updates, or privacy-policy edits. The Passwords app can now log into sites and rotate credentials on the user's behalf.
The Photos app picks up reframe and extend tools, alongside a materially improved eraser that leaves fewer artifacts when removing objects. Messages containing event or location information now trigger smart suggestions to add them to Calendar or Notes. There's a dedicated Siri app with chat history, adjustable voice and expressiveness in Settings, and a new logo and transition animation.
The quality-of-life wins matter almost as much as the AI ones. A universal clipboard now moves links, photos, videos, and text between apps with a one-tap paste button on the keyboard. Liquid Glass transparency is now granular rather than preset-based, addressing the most common complaint about the prior visual language. Intelligent network switching flips between Wi-Fi and cellular when the wireless connection degrades, without dropping active sessions.
Child safety gets a dedicated setup flow with recommended essential apps, per-day time limits and allowances, and remote approval for new website access. Parents receive notifications when kids visit new sites, and the system warns children exposed to nudity across Messages, FaceTime, and other apps.
Not everything works cleanly yet. Siri stumbled in earlier developer builds on sports lookups, and adding items to specific notes required renaming the target note to something simpler before the assistant would route correctly. Photos' reframe and extend features produce inconsistent results. Third-party app handoff — the piece that will determine whether Siri actually becomes an operating layer versus a smarter Q&A box — depends entirely on how quickly developers ship compatible updates once the OS rolls out broadly.
The competitive frame is what makes this launch interesting for the AI market rather than just for Apple users. Apple has effectively conceded that it cannot build a frontier consumer assistant on its own model stack in the timeframe users expect, and has instead licensed the capability from Google while keeping the interface, distribution, and data boundary. That's a template other hardware makers will study — a device manufacturer with a billion-plus install base paying a model provider for inference rather than trying to train its way to parity. For Gemini, it's the largest consumer distribution deal in AI to date, embedded in the default assistant of every recent iPhone. For OpenAI, whose ChatGPT integration Siri just displaced, it's a reminder that platform relationships are not sticky when the platform owner has a better offer.
