Google on October 21 began rolling out Gemini inside Google Maps on Apple CarPlay, letting drivers ask the assistant multi-step questions and give navigation commands from the car's display. The feature is live now in the US, and Google said a global rollout is underway.
Drivers reach Gemini by tapping its icon on the right edge of the Google Maps screen while navigating. Google describes the feature as a conversational way to find stops on the go, report traffic disruptions and get information about places, and says Gemini handles multi-part questions well.
Google's examples show how those requests chain together. A driver can ask Gemini to find a park with a view over the city, then check whether a planned departure time will be less busy and have good weather. A demo image from Google shows a question about Kerry Park in Seattle.
Key facts
- 01Google began rolling out Gemini in Google Maps on Apple CarPlay on October 21, 2026, starting in the US.
- 02Drivers tap a Gemini icon in Maps to ask multi-step questions and give commands such as avoiding toll roads.
- 03It is the first voice assistant Google Maps has offered inside its CarPlay app.
- 04The launch came a day after Google rolled out Gemini Personal Intelligence to Android Auto on October 20.
Gemini can also take direct commands. Drivers can tell it to start navigating to a destination and add preferences such as avoiding toll roads, without leaving the Maps interface on the car's screen.
Voice reporting of traffic disruptions comes along too. That matches the Gemini navigation feature Google introduced for Android and iOS in November 2025, which let people find places along their route or locate vehicle charging stations, and which was already available in Android Auto.
This is the first time Google Maps has offered voice-assistant functionality inside its CarPlay app. Previously, Google Assistant worked only when drivers ran Google Maps navigation directly on the iPhone. Gemini was already available in Google Maps on iPhone, and the update extends it to the car display.
The CarPlay rollout lands one day after Google released Gemini Personal Intelligence to Android Auto users on October 20. That feature lets Gemini draw on a user's other Google apps to personalize answers, which Google says improves reasoning and the specificity of responses. Google launched a Gemini-powered conversational interface in Maps in March 2026.
Google did not give a timeline for countries beyond the US. The company said updates can take a few days to reach individual devices.
