Japan Airlines will deploy humanoid robots as baggage handlers and cargo loaders at Tokyo's Haneda Airport starting May 2026, with the pilot running through 2028. The carrier's subsidiary JAL Ground Service is running the test alongside GMO AI & Robotics Corporation, evaluating Unitree Robotics' G1 and UBTECH Robotics' Walker E. The baseline G1 lists at $13,500, while most humanoid units still cost tens of thousands of dollars each.
The stakes are operational, not theatrical. Haneda is Japan's second-largest airport, with flights arriving roughly every two minutes, and Japan Airlines wants to know whether current-generation humanoids can slot into that environment without bespoke work stations or facility retrofits. The trial may expand beyond cargo to cabin cleaning and ground support equipment like baggage carts.
The labor math is the reason this is happening now. Japanese government data shows ground crew headcount fell from 26,300 in March 2019 to 23,700 by September 2023, a roughly 10% drop over four and a half years even as inbound tourism rebounded. In December 2023, Narita Airport reportedly could not respond to more than 30% of requested flights each week because of cargo handler and ground crew shortages, according to The Mainichi.

Japan Airlines framed the experiment as a test of whether humanoid robots powered by recent AI models can adapt to human work environments "without requiring dedicated work stations or other significant workplace modifications." That is the load-bearing question for the entire humanoid category. Robotic arms and AGVs already dominate factories and warehouses precisely because the environment is engineered around them.

Airports are the opposite — open, crowded, weather-exposed, and full of moving vehicles and time pressure. The pilot's first step, per Japan Airlines, is identifying which airport zones are safe enough to host humanoids working alongside humans at all.
The hardware partners are both Chinese. Unitree's G1 has become the price-leader in the bipedal category at $13,500 for the entry configuration, undercutting US and Japanese competitors by an order of magnitude. UBTECH's Walker E is the more enterprise-positioned platform, already piloted in Chinese auto plants. Choosing both lets JAL Ground Service compare a cheap-and-agile unit against a heavier industrial one on the same tasks.
A staged demonstration video published with the announcement is a useful reality check. In the clip, one of the humanoids walks up to a metal cargo container and makes a vague pushing motion — but the container only moves once a human worker starts the conveyor belt. The robot is, at this stage, more proof-of-presence than proof-of-productivity.
That gap between demo and duty is the central tension across the humanoid sector right now. Sony AI's Ace table tennis robot, which we covered earlier this month, beat amateur players 3–2 in a Nature study — but table tennis is a constrained task with a known ball, a known table, and a known opponent posture. Loading a 747 with mixed cargo at 2 a.m. in the rain is not that.
Skeptics have a straightforward case: humanoids today are slower, weaker, and less reliable than the human workers they would replace, and the safety envelope around aircraft operations is unforgiving. A dropped container, a collision with a tug, or a fall onto the apron are all events that grind a major hub to a halt. The pilot's two-year window suggests Japan Airlines understands this is a measurement exercise, not a rollout.
Still, the choice of venue matters. If humanoids can earn their keep at Haneda — under real schedule pressure, in a country with both an acute labor shortage and a cultural tolerance for visible automation — the template travels. Airports in Seoul, Singapore, and Frankfurt face the same demographic curve, and the unit economics start to pencil quickly when a $13,500 robot can offset even a fraction of a ground crew shift. The question for the next two years is whether Unitree and UBTECH can close the gap between pushing a cargo container and actually moving it.
