Meta ships a Mac app for its AI assistant with screen sharing and dictation

The desktop app lets Meta AI see your window, transcribe across apps, and connect to Instagram, Facebook, and Google Workspace.

Meta launched a dedicated Mac app for Meta AI on Wednesday, adding window sharing, cross-app dictation, and direct hooks into Instagram, Facebook, and Google Workspace. The move plants Meta on the macOS desktop alongside ChatGPT, Claude, and Gemini, all of which already ship native apps there. It also reframes Meta AI from a social-feed novelty into something closer to a work assistant.

The headline capability is screen context. Users can share a window with Meta AI, and the assistant will read what is displayed to answer questions, suggest edits, or generate content on top of it. Meta AI on the Mac also handles dictation across every app on the system, not just Meta's own surfaces.

That puts Meta roughly at parity with Gemini's window-sharing feature, though still a step behind ChatGPT and Claude, whose desktop apps can actually take control of the computer and execute tasks. Meta AI observes and suggests; the OpenAI and Anthropic apps click and type. For most users writing a doc or drafting a caption, the gap is narrower than it sounds.

Key facts

  • 01Meta launched a dedicated Mac app for Meta AI on Wednesday, August 19, 2026.
  • 02The app supports window sharing, letting Meta AI read what is on the user's screen to answer questions or generate content.
  • 03Meta AI on Mac supports system-wide dictation across all applications.
  • 04The assistant now connects to Instagram, Facebook, Meta ad campaigns, and Google Workspace on web, mobile, and Mac.
  • 05Meta AI can analyze post reach, likes, shares, and saves to suggest what a business should post next.

The bigger shift is the connector layer. Meta AI now works directly with Instagram accounts, Facebook accounts, Meta ad campaigns, and Google Workspace across web, mobile, and Mac. That gives the assistant read access to the two pieces of infrastructure most small businesses actually run on: their social presence and their office documents.

Meta pitched a concrete use case: the assistant can pull reach, likes, shares, and saves from a business's posts and recommend what to publish next. It can also pull from a company's account and the open web to build decks, docs, and spreadsheets, and run recurring tasks such as weekly performance updates. That is a direct swing at the small-business marketing workflows that today get stitched together across Later, Canva, Google Sheets, and a group chat.

The competitive frame here matters. ChatGPT ships with a Mac app and now controls Google Workspace via connectors. Claude has a desktop app with computer-use capability. Gemini has native Workspace integration and a Mac app with screen sharing. Meta AI was, until this launch, the assistant most tied to a phone and a social feed. Shipping a Mac app closes an obvious gap.

Meta has not disclosed pricing for the Mac app, user numbers for Meta AI, or any performance benchmarks against rival assistants. The company also has not said whether the Instagram and Facebook connectors are limited to business accounts or available on personal profiles, which will determine how quickly the productivity pitch actually lands with creators.

The productivity assistant category is now crowded with four serious desktop entrants, and each one is racing to become the default surface where users draft, analyze, and post. Meta's structural advantage is the social graph — no one else can natively read Instagram engagement data and turn it into a content calendar. Whether that is enough to pull power users off ChatGPT and Claude, both of which have a two-year head start on desktop workflows, is the real test. For businesses already running ads and posts through Meta, the friction to try the Mac app is close to zero, and that is how the assistant wars are actually being won.
