OpenAI has extended voice-driven agentic workflows to the ChatGPT mobile app, letting Plus and Pro subscribers trigger tasks like drafting documents, summarizing Slack messages, or building presentations by talking to their phone. The rollout, announced on September 23, 2026, ports capabilities that arrived on desktop earlier this year into a form factor where voice input actually makes sense. The Work tab is the centerpiece. Plus and Pro users can now use it on mobile to create a document, draft an email, summarize a Slack thread, build a site, spin up a presentation, or drive the cloud browser — all through voice. They can also access other areas including finances inside ChatGPT. It is a meaningful expansion of what a phone-based assistant is expected to do without a keyboard.
OpenAI said ChatGPT's voice conversations will now render richer text output alongside the audio, and users can toggle between text and voice mid-conversation. A session started on mobile can be resumed on desktop, closing one of the more irritating gaps in the product. Until now, voice on ChatGPT largely lived in its own silo.

The feature builds on GPT-Live, the conversational model OpenAI shipped in July 2026. GPT-Live was later wired into the desktop app so users could complete tasks in the Work tab or build applications in the Codex tab by voice. Today's release brings the same wiring to iOS and Android, which is where most people actually issue quick spoken commands.
The competitive frame is worth naming. Anthropic recently smoothed the handoff between mobile and desktop and merged its Cowork and Chat interfaces into a single surface. OpenAI is going the other direction, keeping chat and workspaces distinct while making it easier to move between them. Two different bets on how users want to organize AI-driven work.
The mobile rollout also reflects a shift in how people interact with AI assistants. Voice has moved from a novelty for setting timers and playing music into a serious input mode for multi-step tasks — writing, research, coding, calendar work. The difficulty has always been that voice was fast to start a task and slow to finish one, because the payoff sat inside a document or a dashboard the user had to open separately. Richer inline text output on the phone starts to close that loop.
The tiering matters for how this lands commercially. Plus and Pro are where the agentic Work-tab surface lives; Free and Go get a lighter voice experience through plugins and connected apps. It is a familiar OpenAI playbook — put the heaviest capabilities behind a paid tier, use the free tier to seed distribution, and make sure the gap between them is obvious enough to drive upgrades. The Work tab, sitting behind the paywall on mobile, is a fairly direct upgrade prompt.
There are open questions the announcement did not address. Latency on a cloud-browser task driven by voice is not trivial. Accuracy on transcribing complex proper nouns — client names, ticker symbols, filenames — remains a friction point for any voice agent that has to hand results back into a workflow. And the reliability of long-running voice-initiated tasks, especially ones that spawn subtasks the user cannot easily monitor on a phone screen, is a category where every vendor is still iterating. OpenAI has not published mobile-specific benchmarks for GPT-Live's Work-tab performance.
The strategic read is that OpenAI is trying to make ChatGPT the default place work happens across form factors, not just the default place answers come from. Every additional surface where a subscriber can start a task — voice on a phone, text on a laptop, cloud browser in between — raises the switching cost of moving to a competitor. Anthropic's merged Cowork-Chat surface is chasing the same lock-in from a different angle, and Google is doing it through Workspace integration. The category is converging on the same insight: the winner is whoever owns the workflow, not just the model.
