Perplexity opened its Personal Computer app to all Mac users on Thursday, lifting the Perplexity Max paywall and waitlist that had gated the local AI agent since its debut last month. The app ships with more than 400 connectors and is designed to run autonomous agents directly on a user's Mac, with the option to trigger or approve tasks remotely from an iPhone. It is the company's most aggressive push yet into on-device agentic computing.
Personal Computer is an extension of Perplexity Computer, the company's general-purpose multi-model digital worker. Where Computer lives in the cloud, Personal Computer hands an agent access to local files, native Mac applications, the 400-plus connectors and a user's personal context — all stitched together inside a sandboxed development environment on Perplexity's servers.
"Personal Computer takes Computer out of the cloud-only world and onto the device where most of your real work already takes place," the company said in describing the launch. The framing is deliberate: Perplexity wants the agent close to the spreadsheets, documents and project folders that users already touch daily, not stranded behind a browser tab.

The competitive target is OpenClaw, the local AI agent that popularized the category by giving models elevated permissions to act on a user's machine. OpenClaw drew quick adoption and equally quick scrutiny over its security posture. Perplexity is pitching Personal Computer as a safer alternative, with execution sandboxed on its servers rather than running with broad system privileges on the device itself — though the claim will need real-world stress before it's settled.

When paired with Perplexity's Comet browser, Personal Computer can drive web-based tools without needing dedicated connectors for each one, using the browser as a universal interface. That pairing matters: it means the agent does not need a bespoke integration with every SaaS app a user touches, and it widens the practical surface area beyond the 400 connectors shipped at launch.
Perplexity is suggesting an always-on hardware setup as the canonical configuration. A Mac Mini left running can host the agent, with the iPhone acting as the remote control to kick off jobs or sign off on actions the agent wants to take. That model — desktop as agent host, phone as approval layer — is a notable bet on a multi-device choreography that Apple's own ecosystem has not formally embraced.
The use cases Perplexity is pointing to are mundane on purpose: comparing two files across different applications, pulling notes from one app to draft something in another, working through spreadsheets and multi-material projects. The pitch is not a flashy demo but the long tail of office drudgery that current chatbots cannot touch because they lack hands on the user's actual machine.
Personal Computer first appeared last month limited to Perplexity Max subscribers and behind a waitlist. Today's general availability removes both gates for Mac users, and Perplexity said the older Perplexity Mac app will be deprecated in the weeks ahead so the team can concentrate on the new app. For now the download is direct from Perplexity; it is not in the Mac App Store, which sidesteps Apple's review but also any distribution boost from the storefront.
The skeptic's case writes itself. Routing local file access through Perplexity's servers is a different trust model than running entirely on-device, and the company has not detailed how the sandbox handles sensitive documents or what telemetry the agent logs. The 400-connector number is also a ceiling on integration breadth, not a floor on reliability — agentic apps tend to look impressive in scripted demos and wobble on the long tail of real workflows. Apple has not commented on whether the iPhone-as-remote pattern will run into platform restrictions later.
For Perplexity, the launch is a bid to convert search traffic and Comet usage into a stickier, deeper relationship with paying users — and to do it before Apple's own agent ambitions materialize on the Mac. The company has been pushing aggressively across surfaces this year, and Personal Computer is the most committed expression yet of its view that the agent layer, not the chat box, is where AI products ultimately compete. Whether Mac users adopt a third-party agent that lives between their files and the cloud is the question that will define the next quarter for the product.
