Reddit fans build Claude-coded tools to undercut FIFA World Cup ticket prices

A subreddit of 140,000 soccer fans is using Claude Code to scrape FIFA's marketplace, expose scalper markups, and route resales through WhatsApp.

Soccer fans on r/WorldCup2026Tickets are using Claude Code to build their own ticket-pricing tools, route resales around FIFA's 30% commission, and push prices for marquee 2026 World Cup matches below face value. The 140,000-member subreddit has produced at least one working product, SeatSidekick, which pulled 178,000 unique visitors and more than 1 million pageviews within a month of its April 18 launch. On May 17, Jordan vs. Algeria became the first game to drop below $100 a ticket on FIFA's official resale market — against a $450 face value.

The tooling exists because FIFA's ticketing process gives buyers almost no native price discovery. This is the first World Cup with dynamic pricing and uncapped resale listings; one ticket to the July 19 final is currently listed at $11.5 million. FIFA, a nonprofit, takes 30% on each resale, split into a 15% buyer's fee and a 15% seller's fee. The attorneys general of New York and New Jersey subpoenaed FIFA on May 27 as part of an investigation into the ticketing practices.

SeatSidekick was built by Luke, a Chicago-based fan who asked that his last name be withheld, in five days using Anthropic's Claude Code. The site scrapes the backend of FIFA's ticketing system, sorts seat inventory by price in near real time, and surfaces trend data and alerts on price drops. France vs. Senegal — a New York fixture featuring Kylian Mbappé and Sadio Mané — saw its get-in price fall 25% over two weeks in May, to about $450.

Key facts

  • 01SeatSidekick, built in 5 days with Claude Code, drew 178,000 unique visitors and over 1 million pageviews within a month of its April 18 launch.
  • 02Jordan vs. Algeria became the first World Cup game to fall below $100 a ticket on the official resale market on May 17, against a $450 face value.
  • 03FIFA pockets 30% commission on each resale, split between a 15% buyer's fee and a 15% seller's fee.
  • 04The r/WorldCup2026Tickets subreddit has more than 140,000 members and runs a WhatsApp marketplace that already hit the platform's 1,024-member cap.
  • 05SeatSidekick data shows more than 260,000 tickets still unsold roughly a week before the tournament begins.

The subreddit's tone has shifted in step. Fans now post 'do not buy' and 'HOLD' memes echoing the 2021 GameStop episode on r/WallStreetBets, urging others to wait out scalpers and FIFA's pricing model. Posts from genuine resellers — including fans who got extra tickets in the lottery — routinely get downvoted, regardless of whether the asking price is reasonable.

David Dirring, an Atlanta-based data scientist, built a separate pricing tool on Claude for a friend who came out of the lottery with too many tickets. He says the response on the subreddit was hostile because he was seen as helping a seller, even though FIFA's platform is a marketplace by design.

The community has also moved transactions off the official platform. Moderators run WhatsApp groups for direct fan-to-fan resale, which lets both sides avoid the 15% buyer's fee. The first group hit WhatsApp's 1,024-member cap and a second had to be opened. Moderators say there are transactions most hours.

Coleman, a moderator who works in finance and also asked that his last name not be used, bought four tickets to a New York game for $500 each in person at his Manhattan office. The same tickets were listed at $800 on official resale, which would have come to $920 each after the 15% buyer's fee — a total saving of $1,680 across the four seats.

Tomas Chamorro-Premuzic, a professor of business psychology at University College London, frames this as the first World Cup of the generative-AI era and expects an escalating loop between fan-built tools and the platforms they're scraping. Luke says FIFA has already shut down the main data route SeatSidekick relied on, and he has since found a workaround. FIFA did not respond to multiple requests for comment.

The subreddit has also begun amplifying potential class-action claims. Some fans allege they were assigned worse seats than they paid for after FIFA introduced a new front-row category, priced in the thousands of dollars, months after the lottery phase had closed. Other community-built websites argue that FIFA's original seat maps overstated the availability of prized sideline seats that were later reserved for hospitality.

The displeasure is showing up in inventory. SeatSidekick counts more than 260,000 tickets still for sale with a little over a week before the tournament begins. Luke argues his tool actually drives bookings for FIFA, since it points fans toward official inventory at prices they're willing to pay, but he also concedes the irony: visible falling prices are giving the community confidence to hold even longer.

The episode is a small but clean case study for where Claude Code and similar agentic coding tools land in 2026. A single fan, working five days, produced a public-facing scraper, a UX layer, and an alerting system that materially moved the secondary-market price on one of the most-watched ticketing events in the world. The barrier to building consumer software against a hostile or opaque platform has collapsed, and incumbents that relied on poor price discovery as a margin lever — ticketing, travel, resale marketplaces broadly — should expect the same treatment from any sufficiently motivated user base with a subreddit and an API key.
