Roblox launches Build, an AI text-to-game tool inside its mobile app

Roblox announced a new mobile feature called Build that turns text prompts into playable games, opening public alpha testing on July 28 to verified users in New Zealand aged nine and older. Users aged 16 and up will be able to publish creations globally. The tool ships with a free basic tier and paid options, and it lets someone with no programming experience type a line like "Let's make a cozy adventure game set in a dense forest" and get back a functional draft.

Build runs on a mix of open-source and proprietary Roblox models and handles gameplay mechanics, environments, characters, visual style, and sound in a single pass. Users then edit and share the output with friends. It is the most consumer-facing piece yet of Roblox's AI stack, which already includes an AI foundation model for generating 3D game assets and a chatbot that helps developers through the build process.

The company is not alone in chasing text-to-game. Google, Microsoft, and Tencent have all shipped similar generative tools in the last year, and each has run into the same complaint: reducing the barrier to publish games invites a flood of low-quality, repetitive content. On Roblox specifically, that concern lands harder because existing human creators would now be competing with AI output that can be spun up in minutes.

Key facts

  • 01Roblox Build enters public alpha on July 28, limited to verified New Zealand users aged nine and older.
  • 02Users aged 16 and up will be able to publish AI-generated creations to a global audience.
  • 03Build runs on a mix of open-source and proprietary Roblox models, generating mechanics, environments, characters, and sound from a text prompt.
  • 0452% of game industry professionals surveyed at this year's Game Developers Conference say generative AI is having a negative impact on the industry.
  • 05Roblox is also building AI playtesting and analytics agents, a 3D asset foundation model, and a new scene-generation model that turns a single prompt into an editable 3D scene.

Roblox's answer is to let discovery do the filtering rather than gate creation. AI-generated games will be ranked the same way every other Roblox game is ranked — by player retention. Titles no one plays past the first session will not surface on the homepage, whether they were built by a studio or generated from a prompt.

That is a defensible design choice, and it matters because the underlying skepticism inside the industry is real. The Game Developers Conference State of the Game Industry survey this year found that 52% of game industry professionals believe generative AI is having a negative impact on the industry. Roblox is shipping into that headwind and betting that the retention filter is enough to keep the front page clean.

Build is the visible layer, but Roblox has more coming. The company said AI agents that assist creators with playtesting and analytics will roll out in the upcoming months, aimed at the middle of the creator funnel — people who already know how to build but want automated feedback loops.

Our discovery systems are designed to highlight games with long-term retention, which doesn't include AI slop. The quality of games on the homepage isn't changing: If no one plays it — no one can find it. The goal across these new tools is to continue to accelerate creation across all experience levels

Further out, Roblox is developing a new scene-generation model designed to produce entire editable and playable 3D scenes from a single text prompt. Paired with the existing 3D asset foundation model, that would move the platform from prompt-to-game-draft toward prompt-to-full-environment, which is a larger technical claim and a larger commercial one.

The Build announcement also arrives shortly after Roblox disclosed plans to discontinue Roblox Connect, the avatar-based video-calling feature introduced in 2023. Retiring a social feature that failed to gain traction while pouring resources into generative creation tools tells you where the company thinks the next wave of engagement comes from.

The staged rollout — New Zealand first, age nine as the floor for building, age 16 as the floor for publishing — is the more interesting operational detail. It gives Roblox a small, verified user base to stress-test moderation and safety on AI-generated user content before that content can reach a global audience. Given how much regulatory attention Roblox already draws over child safety, running the alpha in a single jurisdiction with age verification is the cautious path.

For Roblox, Build is a bet that the next generation of its creators will be prompt-writers rather than script-writers, and that the platform's existing discovery and retention machinery is strong enough to sort quality from noise at higher volume. If the retention filter works, Roblox gets a much larger creator pool without diluting the homepage. If it doesn't, the platform will be judged on the worst 10% of what Build produces, not the best 10% — which is the risk every generative product on a social surface eventually has to answer for.
