Anthropic

Anthropic — the AI safety company behind Claude, Claude Code, and the Constitutional AI research program.

By Anthropic · Launched · Updated

Anthropic is the AI safety company that makes Claude. Founded in 2021 by ex-OpenAI researchers — including CEO Dario Amodei and President Daniela Amodei — Anthropic has become one of the two pure-play frontier AI companies by market value, built a distinctive developer and enterprise presence, and positioned itself as the safety-first counterpart to OpenAI.

This page is the living reference to Anthropic as a company — its history, leadership, products, funding, and every story we publish tagged Anthropic. We update it whenever Anthropic ships a meaningful change.

Founders and mission

Anthropic was founded by a group that had led GPT-2 and GPT-3 work at OpenAI. The move was publicly described as a disagreement about AI safety research priorities — specifically, how much of a frontier lab's budget and attention should go toward alignment, interpretability, and safety work versus deployment scale. Anthropic was set up as a public benefit corporation from day one, with mission-protection structure that later evolved into the Long-Term Benefit Trust.

The mission statement — "AI safety is our mission" — is more than branding. Most of Anthropic's flagship research publications (the Constitutional AI method, the Responsible Scaling Policy, extensive interpretability work on Claude's internal representations) are expressions of that mission operationalized into how Claude is built and shipped.

Governance and the Long-Term Benefit Trust

Anthropic's governance includes an unusual element: the Long-Term Benefit Trust, a body charged with electing a majority of the company's board over time. The Trust is mission-aligned rather than investor-aligned, and its existence is intended to preserve Anthropic's safety orientation even as the cap table grows and commercial pressures increase.

Whether the Trust actually achieves that in the long run is an open question that the AI governance community watches closely. It's one of the more consequential experiments in how a frontier AI company can structure itself to prioritize long-horizon mission concerns over quarter-to-quarter business pressures.

Product portfolio

Anthropic ships a smaller, more focused portfolio than OpenAI. The headline products are Claude (the chatbot, at claude.ai and via API), Claude Code (the CLI-native coding agent that has become the reference developer product), the Claude Agent SDK (for third-party agent development), and the enterprise API platform with tool use, prompt caching, and extended thinking capabilities.

A notable feature of Anthropic's product mix is its developer skew. A larger share of Anthropic's revenue comes from API and developer tools relative to OpenAI's more consumer-heavy mix. Claude Code in particular has become the reference coding agent — the product that many developers benchmark other coding agents against.

The cloud partnerships

Amazon's investment in Anthropic (committed up to $8B across multiple tranches) makes it the single largest outside investor in the company, and AWS is Anthropic's primary cloud partner. Claude is the flagship model on AWS Bedrock, and Anthropic trains substantially on AWS Trainium and Nvidia-based AWS infrastructure. Google is the secondary partner with its own significant investment — Claude is available on Google Cloud Vertex AI.

This dual-cloud, dual-investor structure is a deliberate counterweight to OpenAI's single-cloud Microsoft relationship. It gives Anthropic more optionality on capacity and strategic flexibility as the frontier-training infrastructure requirements escalate.

Where Anthropic sits in the 2026 landscape

Anthropic is the second frontier AI company by most measures — consumer users, enterprise revenue, market value — but with distinctive strengths that have kept it ahead of the pack chasing OpenAI. Coding-focused developer mindshare is the most visible; enterprise trust driven by the safety positioning is another. The most recent funding round at a reported ~$350B valuation underscored that investor conviction in Anthropic's trajectory remains high even as the broader frontier model landscape has commoditized faster than many predicted.

The open questions for Anthropic in 2026 are the same as for the category: agent monetization, competitive pressure from open-weights models (DeepSeek, Llama), the durability of the Amazon relationship, and whether Anthropic's safety-forward positioning continues to convert to enterprise sales faster than it costs the company on consumer ground.

Frequently asked questions

Who founded Anthropic?
Anthropic was founded in early 2021 by Dario Amodei (CEO), Daniela Amodei (President), and a group of senior researchers who left OpenAI — including Tom Brown, Sam McCandlish, Jack Clark, Jared Kaplan, and others. Most were involved in GPT-3's development.
Why did they leave OpenAI?
The founders have publicly cited differing views on AI safety research priorities and how frontier labs should balance deployment pace with safety work. Dario Amodei has been explicit that Anthropic was founded to pursue safety-first frontier AI in a way the founders felt wasn't the primary orientation at their prior lab.
How does Anthropic differ from OpenAI?
Product-wise, smaller: fewer surfaces, more focused. Philosophically: Anthropic positions itself as a safety lab that happens to ship frontier products, with mission protection via its Long-Term Benefit Trust. Commercially, its developer and enterprise traction is outsized relative to its consumer ChatGPT competition — a different strategy than OpenAI's consumer-first approach.
Who owns Anthropic?
Anthropic is a Public Benefit Corporation. Major investors include Amazon (largest, ~$8B+ committed), Google (significant minority), plus typical venture firms. A substantial portion of governance sits with the Long-Term Benefit Trust, a structure designed to ensure mission alignment independent of investor control.
What is Constitutional AI?
Anthropic's core alignment research technique. Instead of training a model with reinforcement learning from human feedback on every example, Constitutional AI trains the model using a set of explicit principles (the "constitution") that govern what the model should and shouldn't do. This is a core part of how Claude is trained.
What products does Anthropic make?
Claude (consumer chatbot + API), Claude Code (CLI-native coding agent), Claude Agent SDK (for building custom agents), and an enterprise API platform with tool use, prompt caching, and extended thinking. See our [Claude hub](/claude) for the product details.
What's the AWS relationship?
Amazon is Anthropic's largest strategic investor and primary cloud partner. Claude is the flagship model on AWS Bedrock. Much of Anthropic's training and inference infrastructure runs on AWS Trainium and EC2. Google Cloud is the secondary partner; Claude is also available on Google Cloud Vertex AI.
How does Anthropic make money?
Consumer subscriptions (Claude Pro, Max, Team), API revenue (a significant share of its revenue base — developer adoption is a particular strength), enterprise deals, and cloud partner rev-share. Anthropic's developer/API mix is notably higher than OpenAI's.
What is Anthropic's position on AI safety?
Publicly, Anthropic argues that frontier AI is on a trajectory that requires substantial investment in alignment research and in governance frameworks. The company publishes extensively (Responsible Scaling Policy, Constitutional AI, model cards, interpretability research) and has been vocal in policy conversations about transparency requirements for frontier labs.
