Adobe acquires Indian marketing AI startup Rilo in team-and-tech deal

Adobe has acquired Rilo, an India-based marketing intelligence startup founded in 2025, in a licensing and team deal that brings a six-person crew and workflow-automation technology into Adobe's marketing stack. Rilo had raised $1 million at a $10 million valuation from PeakXV, DeVC, and Day Zero Ventures before the deal. Financial terms were not disclosed, but a source told TechCrunch that investors will get an exit and Adobe will integrate portions of Rilo's IP alongside the team.

This is Adobe's second acquisition out of India, following its 2023 purchase of AI video platform Rephrase.ai. It is a far smaller bet than Adobe's headline marketing deal of the past year — the $1.9 billion acquisition of SEO company Semrush — but it fits the same pattern: buying to plug specific gaps in Adobe's customer experience and marketing suite as generative AI reshapes how campaigns get built and measured.

Rilo was launched by IIT batchmates Georgi Boby and Dhruv Jaglan. Its product let go-to-market teams assemble custom workflows for competitor intelligence, content repurposing and distribution, and sales-call analysis. Functionally, it sat in the same category as Claude Cowork and ChatGPT Work, giving marketing and sales operators a way to string AI actions together across their day-to-day tools.

Key facts

  • 01Adobe acquired India-based Rilo in a licensing and team deal covering a six-person team and select IP; terms were not disclosed.
  • 02Rilo was founded in 2025 by IIT batchmates Georgi Boby and Dhruv Jaglan and raised $1M at a $10M valuation.
  • 03Backers PeakXV, DeVC, and Day Zero Ventures will get an exit; Rilo will shut down post-acquisition.
  • 04This is Adobe's second India acquisition after Rephrase.ai in 2023 and follows its $1.9B purchase of Semrush last year.

The workflow-builder angle is what appears to have made Rilo attractive to Adobe. Enterprise marketing teams are increasingly using AI to automate campaign creation, deployment, and tracking, pull action items out of meetings, and monitor brand visibility on assistants like ChatGPT, Gemini, and Claude. Adobe's larger customers want that orchestration layer wired directly into the tools they already pay for.

Rahul Gupta, Managing Partner at Day Zero Ventures, said the workflow builder was ahead of the curve and would help Adobe on customer experience and productivity. DeVC's Rahul Mathur told TechCrunch that Rilo fits into Adobe's CX and marketing suite for handling complex workflows and giving customers visibility into what happens on Adobe's platform.

Rilo will shut down post-acquisition and its product will no longer be available to existing customers — a standard outcome for acqui-hires of this size, where the buyer wants the people and the code, not the standalone brand. For a startup founded barely a year ago, an exit to Adobe at this stage is a fast return for its early backers.

The deal lands in a marketing-AI market that is now openly contested. Canva has been buying and building to expand beyond design into marketing operations. Amazon, Google, and Meta each run their own AI-powered marketing rails tied to their ad ecosystems. Adobe's response has been to buy specialists — Semrush for search and competitive intelligence at scale, Rilo for agentic workflow orchestration — rather than try to rebuild every capability in-house.

The obvious risk for Adobe is that workflow orchestration is exactly the kind of layer that foundation-model providers are pushing into themselves. Anthropic's Claude Cowork and OpenAI's ChatGPT Work aim at the same buyer Rilo was courting. A six-person team and some IP will not, on their own, decide who owns that workflow layer inside the enterprise.

For Adobe, the calculation is that owning the marketing-specific version of that workflow — tied to Creative Cloud, Experience Cloud, and now Semrush's data — is more defensible than a horizontal assistant. Small India-based acquisitions like Rilo are a cheap way to keep testing that thesis while the larger Semrush integration plays out. If the pattern holds, more deals in this size range should be expected before Adobe writes another nine-figure check.
