Airbnb will launch its own AI travel agent to consumers in the first half of 2027, the company said in its third-quarter shareholder letter on Thursday. The agent will help travelers plan trips, compare options, manage bookings and get help during their stay, and it firms up a timeline Airbnb had previously described only as next year.
Rather than a text-only chatbot, the Airbnb agent will assemble its interface for each request from a library of hundreds of travel-specific interface components. It will start with homes and hotels before expanding to Airbnb's services and experiences.
CEO Brian Chesky used the earnings call to explain why Airbnb is building its own agent instead of relying on general-purpose assistants. He said agents such as Muse and Instinct handle simple routine tasks like restaurant reservations or appointment scheduling well, but that planning a trip is different. He cited Airbnb data showing 80% of travelers say they enjoy spending time researching trips.
“Travel is aspirational. Discovering where to go and where to stay is part of the experience.”— Brian Chesky, CEO of Airbnb
Key facts
- 01Airbnb said in its Q3 shareholder letter that its AI travel agent will launch to consumers in the first half of 2027.
- 02The agent will build each interface from hundreds of travel-specific components such as maps, photos, calendars and itineraries.
- 03It will start with homes and hotels, then expand to services and experiences.
- 04Airbnb's Q3 revenue rose 19% to $4.87 billion, topping estimates.
- 05Airbnb raised its 2026 revenue growth outlook to the high teens from the mid-teens.
Chesky said travelers want to look at photos, compare homes and make decisions with the people they are traveling with, and that a general-purpose agent is not built for that kind of shared, visual decision.
“And I don't think the general-purpose agents are the best to do that. So that is why we are building our own AI agent”— Brian Chesky, CEO of Airbnb
Airbnb's agent will draw on components such as maps, photos, comparisons, calendars and itineraries and compose them in real time to match what a guest is looking for. Chesky described traditional chat as very text-heavy and not the way people should plan travel. An Airbnb executive said the result will feel a little like generative UI, designed to offer the right interface at the right time.
Airbnb is also positioning the agent around tasks it says outside assistants cannot easily handle. In the shareholder letter, the company said its agent will help guests throughout a trip, from changing a reservation or resolving a payment issue to getting refunds, rebooking or 24-hour safety support.
The announcement landed alongside a strong quarter. Airbnb's third-quarter revenue rose 19% to $4.87 billion, topping estimates, and the company raised its 2026 revenue growth forecast to the high teens from the mid-teens.
Chesky told analysts that Airbnb is back in growth mode and that the third quarter delivered its fastest revenue growth in more than three years.
