Anthropic has agreed to a deal worth about $3.4 billion to lock in roughly 1.7 gigawatts of heavy-duty gas-fired generators for its data centers, according to a Financial Times report published November 8. The seller is OnePWR Solutions, an equipment supplier based in San Antonio, Texas.

Anthropic secured the generator commitments in late September, the report said. The FT described it as the largest known single purchase of power-generation equipment by an AI lab.

The transaction is not an acquisition. Anthropic did not buy OnePWR, and no OnePWR employees moved to Anthropic, according to the FT's source. The price does cover the engineering and construction capabilities needed to install the generators, not just the hardware.

Key facts

  • 01Anthropic agreed to a roughly $3.4B deal for about 1.7GW of heavy-duty gas-fired generators, the Financial Times reported.
  • 02The seller is OnePWR Solutions, an equipment supplier based in San Antonio, Texas; commitments were secured in late September.
  • 03Anthropic did not acquire OnePWR and no employees moved, but the package includes engineering and construction capability to install the units.
  • 04The generators are Caterpillar units OnePWR ordered about two years ago, before equipment prices rose, per the FT.
  • 05Neither Anthropic nor OnePWR commented, and the sites the generators will serve were not disclosed.

The equipment itself comes from Caterpillar. OnePWR had ordered the Caterpillar generators about two years ago but needed financing to complete the purchase, the FT reported. Anthropic had originally planned to become a OnePWR customer and instead took over those orders.

Timing is the main asset in the deal. Because the engines were ordered before prices rose, they are available in the near term and over the next two years, according to the FT. Manufacturing lead times for gas turbines and generators now stretch years out as demand surges.

AI developers have typically bought power through utilities and specialist firms, but they are increasingly going direct to secure equipment. xAI bought mobile gas turbines earlier this year for $2 billion, and Alphabet acquired energy developer Intersect in late 2025, the FT noted.

The generator buy sits inside a much larger infrastructure commitment. Anthropic has disclosed nearly $900 billion in computing commitments running through 2045 as it prepares for its IPO, and it was reported earlier this year to expect more than $500 billion in AI infrastructure investment over the next decade.

The report did not say where the generators will be installed or which Anthropic data centers they will power. Neither Anthropic nor OnePWR commented, and the details had not been independently verified at the time of publication.
