Cursor launched an India-only subscription on Monday priced at ₹649 a month, roughly $7, its first attempt at localized pricing anywhere in the world and a sharp discount to the $20 Pro plan sold in the U.S. and other markets. The move lands weeks before SpaceX is expected to close its $60 billion all-stock acquisition of the AI coding startup in Q3, and it signals where Cursor sees its next tranche of growth: a country where its user base has more than tripled over the past year.
The new tier, called Cursor Start, is now the company's third-largest market entry point. India already ranks third globally for Cursor by user count and hosts the highest concentration of the startup's power users, according to Simon Green, Cursor's head of Asia-Pacific and Japan. The market opportunity is straightforward: GitHub reported earlier this year that India has more than 27 million developers on its platform, trailing only the U.S., with over 2 million joining in 2026 alone.
Green told TechCrunch that the pricing decision was about matching the commercial model to the scale of the developer pool rather than running a loss leader. The plan is billed in Indian rupees and accepts payments via credit and debit cards as well as the Unified Payments Interface, India's dominant instant-payments rail.

Cursor Start includes access to Cursor's own Composer 2.5 model and Grok 4.5, along with higher usage limits than the free tier, cloud agents, the iOS app, plugins, Model Context Protocol support, hooks, and skills. It deliberately omits the more expensive parts of the stack: frontier models from OpenAI and Anthropic, Bugbot, Auto Mode, Automations, and the Cursor SDK all remain gated behind the $20 Pro plan. That gap is what makes the economics work — Cursor's in-house models carry lower inference costs than routing every request to third-party frontier providers.
The launch follows a pattern set by other AI vendors. OpenAI rolled out a sub-$5 ChatGPT Go subscription in India before expanding it elsewhere, and Anthropic has introduced India-specific pricing over the past year. Cursor is applying multiple checks to ensure the tier stays limited to individual users inside the country, including measures aimed at blocking access via VPNs.
Cursor is not treating India as a pricing experiment in isolation. The company recently hired its first salesperson in the country and expects another leader to join in Delhi. It is also building a government-affairs function and adding three technical support hires as it grows headcount across Bengaluru, Chennai, Hyderabad, and Mumbai. Enterprise adoption remains early — most growth so far has come from individual developers, startups, and universities — but Green pointed to banking and large enterprise as the near-term commercial targets.
Green left the door open for the pricing model to travel. If Start proves out in India, similar tiers could show up in other markets, though he stopped short of committing to a timeline.
The corporate backdrop is unusual. SpaceX agreed to buy Cursor for $60 billion in an all-stock transaction just over a month ago, following SpaceX's IPO. The two companies have been working together since April on what they described as a next-generation coding and knowledge-work AI. Green said Cursor will operate independently until the deal closes, and that the India expansion was already in motion before the acquisition was announced.
One question the India rollout does not resolve is how a SpaceX-owned Cursor will handle model relationships with OpenAI and Anthropic, given Elon Musk's competing AI investments. For now, Pro users still get frontier-model access; whether that survives the ownership change is a decision that sits with the acquirer, not the acquired.
For Cursor, the strategic logic of shipping localized pricing before the deal closes is to lock in market share while the company still controls its own roadmap. India's developer market is compounding at a pace no other geography can match, and a $7 entry point buys Cursor distribution across a base that will define whose coding tools become default over the next five years. Once SpaceX takes control, Starlink's existing infrastructure in the country could accelerate that footprint further — a rare case where a satellite-internet operator's presence becomes a distribution asset for an AI product.
