Generalist, a robotics foundation-model startup founded in 2024, is now valued at $3 billion after 8VC led a nearly $200 million extension to its Series B, according to a regulatory filing and two people with knowledge of the deal. The extension sits on top of the $400 million Series B that Radical Ventures led in June at a $2 billion valuation, bringing total funding in the round to $600 million. The markup lands roughly two months after the June close — a fast re-rate in a category where the leaders are being priced like the next generation of foundation-model labs.
The company was founded by former Google DeepMind researchers Pete Florence and Andy Zeng, along with former Boston Dynamics engineer Andrew Barry. Its earliest backers include 8VC, Radical Ventures, Nvidia, Union Square Ventures, Bezos Expeditions, and AI researcher Fei-Fei Li. Generalist operated in stealth for most of its short life and only recently began describing what it is building publicly.
The pitch is a single AI foundation model that can drive many different robots, rather than a bespoke stack tuned to one form factor. Generalist says its newly released Gen 1.5 model lets robots master new tasks from video demonstrations as short as 3 to 12 seconds. That short-demonstration window is the specific technical claim investors are underwriting: if it holds up across form factors and customer environments, it collapses the cost of teaching a robot a new skill from days of engineering work to a handful of clips.

Generalist is working with a small set of customers and using their feedback to tune the model for specific deployments, according to one of the people familiar with the company. Neither Generalist nor 8VC responded to a request for comment on the extension.
The valuation puts Generalist in the same conversation as a short list of robotics foundation-model rivals, though still well behind the category leaders on paper. Physical Intelligence is reportedly valued at $11 billion. SoftBank-backed Skild AI is valued at $14 billion. Genesis AI was in talks last month to raise at a $3 billion valuation, matching Generalist's new mark. Four venture-backed companies are now priced between $3 billion and $14 billion on the premise that a general-purpose robot brain is close.
The bet driving those valuations is that robotics is approaching what investors are calling its own ChatGPT moment — the point at which a single trained model can perform a broad range of physical tasks without being explicitly programmed for each one. That framing has pulled generalist capital into a category that until recently was the province of a few specialist funds.
The counter-case is straightforward and increasingly voiced by other venture investors. Robots cannot be pre-trained on the open internet the way large language models are. Data has to be collected physically, from teleoperation, video, or simulation, and each of those pipelines has its own bottlenecks. Some VCs argue that a genuinely general robotics model is still years away, and that today's demos — including short-video learning like Gen 1.5's — do not yet prove out-of-distribution generalization at the level LLMs achieved.
Generalist's near-term answer to that critique appears to be commercial: work directly with paying customers, narrow the model for their specific use cases, and let real deployments produce the data the internet cannot. That is a slower path than the language-model playbook, but it is one that could produce a defensible dataset moat if the early customer engagements convert into recurring commercial contracts.
The pricing here is the story for the AI market. A 2024-founded company doubling its post-money in roughly two months, on the strength of a foundation-model thesis in a category with no clear revenue leader yet, tells you where growth capital is flowing after the LLM valuations stopped moving. Robotics foundation models are being underwritten on the same logic as the 2022–2023 LLM rounds — buy the team, buy the model, worry about the P&L later — and the $3B, $11B, and $14B marks in the category will be the reference points every subsequent robotics round is measured against. Whether that logic holds depends on which of these labs is first to show a Gen-1.5-style claim working across a customer's fleet, not just in a demo reel.
