Google is embedding AI-generated product descriptions inside sponsored Search results, with Gemini writing custom ad copy that explains why a user should buy a specific item. The update expands advertising into the conversational Search experience Google rolled out at I/O 2026, where queries now return AI Mode responses alongside traditional blue links.

A user searching for a compact espresso pod machine now sees a Nespresso Vertuo Up under a Sponsored Product label, with Gemini-generated text highlighting capsule compatibility, crema quality, a 3-second heat-up time, and 6 cup sizes. The AI pulls product specs and synthesizes them into a buying recommendation formatted as natural-language prose.

Google is also testing chatbot-driven ads inside AI Mode. These ads display an Ask a question button that opens a conversation with Gemini, which uses information from the advertiser's site to answer follow-ups. The chatbot can prompt users to fill out a lead-gen form connecting them to the business directly.

Key facts

  • 01Google's Gemini now generates AI-written product descriptions for sponsored Search results.
  • 02New ad formats in AI Mode include chatbot-driven Q&A tied to advertiser sites and full-screen sponsored product cards.
  • 03A Nespresso Vertuo Up ad example highlights the machine's 3-second heat-up time and 6 cup sizes in AI-generated copy.
  • 04Google introduced basic sponsored results in AI Mode last year; the new formats expand ad surface area within conversational Search.
  • 05The rollout follows Google I/O 2026, where the company debuted a larger Search box and conversational AI Mode interface.

AI Mode now surfaces sponsored results inline with conversational responses. A query like What are some low-maintenance ways to make my home smell amazing? returns an AI-generated answer followed by a full-screen sponsored product card for an air freshener, complete with images and a description. In Google's example mockup, the ad occupies the entire viewport after scrolling.

Another pilot format embeds sponsored products within recommendation lists. A search for language-learning services could serve up an ad for Duolingo at the bottom of AI Mode's suggested apps, with feature callouts included. The sponsored item appears visually distinct but structurally identical to organic results.

Google first introduced basic sponsored results in AI Mode last year. The new formats expand the ad surface area significantly, integrating product pitches directly into the conversational flow rather than separating them into a sidebar or footer.

The timing aligns with Google's broader Search redesign unveiled at I/O 2026. The company debuted a larger Search box designed for multi-sentence queries and positioned AI Mode as the default interface for complex questions. Ads are now part of that conversational layer from the start.

Advertisers gain access to Gemini's natural-language generation for product copy, a format that blurs the line between editorial content and paid placement. The AI synthesizes product specs into buying guidance, a task previously handled by human copywriters or left to users scrolling reviews.

User reception to the earlier AI Mode ads was mixed, with some objecting to the visual weight of sponsored results inside what appeared to be neutral AI-generated answers. The new formats double down on that integration, making ads structurally harder to distinguish from organic content.

Google's ad revenue from Search remains its largest business segment, and the shift to AI Mode creates pressure to monetize conversational interfaces at scale. The company is racing OpenAI, Perplexity, and Microsoft to prove that AI-native search can support the same ad loads as traditional keyword-driven results.

The rollout follows Google's launch of Gemini Spark, a 24/7 AI agent deployed across 900 million users, which we covered last week. That agent handles task automation; the new ad formats turn Search itself into a buying assistant with commercial incentives baked in.

The business model question for AI Mode is whether users tolerate ads inside conversational responses or shift to competitor products with cleaner interfaces. Google is betting that the utility of Gemini's answers outweighs the friction of sponsored placements appearing mid-conversation — a hypothesis the company will test in real time as these formats scale.
