Google's Gemini hits 950M monthly users, closing on ChatGPT

Gemini tripled its user base in a year, and Sensor Tower says ChatGPT's assistant market share has dropped below 50% for the first time.

Google's Gemini assistant reached 950 million monthly users in Q2 2026, tripling its user base from a year earlier and putting it within striking distance of the billion-user threshold that already defines Search, Gmail, Drive, Android, YouTube, and Chrome. Alphabet CEO Sundar Pichai disclosed the figure on the company's Q2 2026 earnings call. The gap to OpenAI's ChatGPT, which hit 1 billion monthly active users in June, is now roughly 50 million users and shrinking fast.

The trajectory is steep. In February, Google said Gemini had crossed 750 million monthly active users. Adding 200 million in roughly five months implies a run-rate that would push Gemini past a billion before the end of the year, assuming growth doesn't stall. For context, ChatGPT took about two and a half years to reach the same mark from its late-2022 launch.

Sensor Tower's H1 2026 State of AI report captures the competitive shift in market-share terms. ChatGPT's share of the AI assistant market fell below 50% for the first time, while Gemini's share rose to 27.7%. That's still a wide lead for OpenAI, but the direction of travel is clear: Google is converting its distribution advantage — default placement on Android, integration into Search, and a growing iOS presence — into raw usage.

Key facts

  • 01Gemini now has over 950 million monthly users, up from 750 million in February and tripling year-over-year.
  • 02OpenAI's ChatGPT hit 1 billion monthly active users in June, keeping it narrowly ahead of Gemini.
  • 03Sensor Tower's H1 2026 report puts ChatGPT's assistant market share below 50% for the first time, with Gemini at 27.7%.
  • 04Google's AI-powered search mode also crossed 1 billion users this quarter, per Alphabet's Q2 2026 call.
  • 05Appfigures counted 137 million iOS downloads of the Gemini app in the last 12 months, boosted by the Nano Banana image model.

Pichai leaned on product velocity as the explanation.

Users love new agentic features like Daily Brief and our personalized agent, Gemini Spark, which is now available in the U.S. and internationally. We've been shipping helpful new features like this at an incredible pace.
Sundar Pichai, Alphabet CEO

iOS is a bigger part of the story than Google's own installed base might suggest. Appfigures counted more than 137 million Gemini app downloads on iOS in the last 12 months, driven in part by the launch of Nano Banana, Google's image generation model. That undercuts the assumption that Gemini's growth is purely a function of Android defaults; iPhone users are actively choosing to install it.

Search, the business that AI assistants are supposed to be threatening, is also showing signs of adaptation rather than erosion. Google's Q&A-style AI mode inside Search crossed 1 billion users during the quarter, and the company said it is driving an incremental increase in search queries. Google also said that through hardware engineering it has reduced the cost of running AI mode, even as it adds new models and features — a claim that matters because inference cost has been the central margin question hanging over Search's AI overhaul.

The economic implication for OpenAI is uncomfortable. ChatGPT's dominance was built on being the first product most consumers associated with generative AI, but that association is softening as Gemini shows up inside apps and workflows users already have. Losing the majority-share position in the assistant market, even by a hair, complicates the narrative OpenAI has used to justify its valuation and its enterprise pitch.

The counterweight is that monthly-user counts flatter distribution and can obscure engagement. A Gemini user who bumps into the assistant inside Gmail once a month is counted the same as a ChatGPT user running a dozen sessions a day. Google has not disclosed daily active users, session length, or query volume per user, and until it does, the 950 million figure is best read as a ceiling on reach rather than a measure of depth. Sensor Tower's market-share numbers, drawn from mobile app usage, also under-count web ChatGPT sessions.

For Google, the milestone validates the strategy of embedding Gemini across products rather than treating it as a standalone destination. It follows Google Cloud's 82% revenue jump to $24.8 billion last quarter, which we covered earlier this month — the AI investment thesis at Alphabet is beginning to show up in both consumer reach and cloud revenue at the same time. The question for the next four quarters is whether OpenAI can hold the top position on engagement even as Google catches up on installed base, and whether Gemini's cost curve continues to bend faster than its usage grows.
