Meta's Hyperion data center supercluster in Richland Parish, Louisiana will scale to 5 gigawatts and cost over $50 billion, the company said in a blog post on Monday. That is nearly double the $27 billion figure disclosed in October, when Meta and Blue Owl Capital formed a joint venture to build and manage the site as a 2GW facility. The project began in December 2024 with an initial price tag of $10 billion.
The revised numbers make Hyperion Meta's largest data center by a wide margin and one of the single largest AI infrastructure commitments announced by any hyperscaler. A Meta spokesperson told CNBC the site should reach 2GW by 2030, with no fixed timeline for full 5GW completion. Meta did not name a financial partner for the expansion beyond the existing Blue Owl Capital joint venture.
The buildout reflects a multi-hundred-billion-dollar AI capex race in which Meta, Microsoft, Alphabet and Amazon are chasing enough compute to train and serve frontier models. Superclusters differ from traditional data centers in that they are packed with GPUs and related hardware optimized for AI workloads rather than general cloud services.

Louisiana courted Meta aggressively. In late 2024, Governor Jeff Landry signed a 20-year sales tax exemption for data centers built before 2029, and he is hosting a press event in Baton Rouge on Monday to mark the expansion. The exemption effectively lowers Meta's cost basis on tens of billions in equipment purchases over the life of the facility.
Meta said it pays the full costs of the energy, water, and related infrastructure the data center uses so consumers aren't paying the cost. Since construction began, local businesses have taken in more than $1.6 billion in contracts from Meta, and the company said the expansion will bring over $1 billion in local infrastructure improvements including roads, water and wastewater systems.
Landry has been direct about the trade-off. He told CNBC last year that the comprehensive package pencils out for the state even with the tax exemption, framing the decision in strict business terms.
The announcement lands after Meta's best week on the stock market since early 2024, following the release of two major AI models under Alexandr Wang, who leads Meta Superintelligence Labs. Investors have been pushing for returns on the company's outsized AI investments, and the Hyperion expansion is the clearest signal yet that Mark Zuckerberg intends to keep spending.
Zuckerberg first floated the 5GW target in a Facebook post roughly six months after construction began. He positioned Hyperion as central to Meta's superintelligence ambitions.

The scale of Hyperion raises open questions about grid capacity and water use in rural Louisiana, and about whether Meta can actually fill 5GW with productive workloads on the timeline it is signaling. Reaching just 2GW by 2030 leaves the back half of the project dependent on model economics and product demand that may or may not materialize. The Blue Owl Capital joint venture structure also puts a portion of the balance-sheet risk off Meta's books, a financing pattern hyperscalers have leaned on more heavily as capex escalates.
For the AI infrastructure market, Hyperion is a marker for what a single-site frontier training cluster now looks like in dollar and gigawatt terms. A $50 billion, 5GW facility resets the benchmark for what Microsoft, Alphabet and Amazon have to match if they want compute parity with Meta Superintelligence Labs, and it hands state governments a template: long-dated sales tax exemptions in exchange for tens of billions in local capex and contracts. Expect more states to write the same deal, and expect the next single-site announcement to be bigger.
