OpenAI has agreed to acquire Pierre Computer Company, the developer-tools startup behind the Git-based Code Storage service, and plans to integrate that storage directly into Codex. Financial terms were not disclosed.
OpenAI is taking on Pierre's technical team along with its tooling, which includes Code Storage and the open-source libraries Trees and Diffs. OpenAI said Pierre's open-source projects will remain available to developers after the deal closes. Closing is subject to customary regulatory approvals, and the two companies will operate independently until then.
Pierre describes Code Storage as a distributed storage system built on Git, with API ergonomics designed for machines. Its listed capabilities include repositories up to 32TB, more than 30 concurrent writes, Git LFS support, SDKs for TypeScript, Python and Go, webhooks, and sync with GitHub, GitLab and Bitbucket. Named customers include Lovable, Bolt, Amp, Poke, Anything and Parahelp.
Key facts
- 01OpenAI agreed to acquire Pierre Computer Company, maker of the Git-based Code Storage service; terms were not disclosed.
- 02OpenAI plans to integrate Code Storage directly into Codex.
- 03Code Storage supports repositories up to 32TB and syncs with GitHub, GitLab and Bitbucket.
- 04Pierre's open-source projects, including Diffs and Trees, will remain available after closing.
- 05OpenAI says its in-house Pando backend cut median code-push latency by nearly 80%.
Codex already relies on Pierre's tools for real-time file tree navigation and visual code diffing. Owning Code Storage lets OpenAI embed repository hosting inside Codex, moving the product toward an end-to-end repository and review environment rather than a code-completion tool.
The acquisition lands two days after OpenAI detailed Pando, an in-house Git-compatible backend for its main repository. OpenAI says Pando cut median code-push latency by nearly 80%, serves close to a petabyte of repository data a day, and went into production in roughly ten weeks, with engineers using Codex agents for the migration work.
The pressure point is volume. AI agents generating large amounts of parallel code are straining conventional version control, and GitHub, owned by OpenAI investor Microsoft, has faced reliability problems under agentic coding load. OpenAI is exploring ways to commercialize its underlying source-control infrastructure for enterprise customers.
Pierre's open-source projects, Diffs, Trees and DiffsHub, will stay open source after the acquisition.
