OpenAI has acquired smartphone camera startup Glass Imaging in a deal worth more than $300 million, according to The Wall Street Journal. The purchase gives OpenAI two former Apple engineers who built Portrait Mode and a neural-network approach to computational photography — the latest signal that the ChatGPT maker intends to ship its own hardware, not just power someone else's.
Glass Imaging was founded in 2019 in Los Altos, California by Ziv Attar and Tom Bishop, and had raised roughly $30 million in outside funding before the deal. At north of $300 million, OpenAI is paying about a 10x markup on total capital raised for a company most consumers have never heard of.
The technology is the reason. Rather than using AI to edit a photo after it has been taken, Glass Imaging trains neural networks on individual camera systems — the specific lens, sensor, and hardware stack of a given phone model — so the image comes out cleaner the moment the shutter fires. That is a different architecture from the post-capture computational photography pipelines that Apple, Google, and Samsung have leaned on for years.

The founders' résumés matter here. Attar and Bishop previously led the team at Apple that developed Portrait Mode, one of the most commercially successful applications of on-device computational photography in the last decade. OpenAI is not buying a research project; it is buying the people who shipped one of the reference features of the modern smartphone camera.
That fits an increasingly obvious pattern. In 2025, Sam Altman and former Apple design chief Jony Ive revealed they had been quietly working together on a device startup called io, and OpenAI bought Ive's company for $6.5 billion. Since then, OpenAI has been reported to be developing its own smartphones, earbuds, and AI companion devices.
Adding a camera-imaging team to that stack is a tell. Any AI-native consumer device — whether a phone, a wearable pin, or a pair of glasses — lives or dies on how well it sees the world. A model that can reason about an image is only as good as the image it is handed. Owning the pipeline from photon to token, rather than licensing it, gives OpenAI a hardware moat that pure software rivals cannot easily replicate.
It also sharpens the competitive frame with Apple. OpenAI is now assembling a team of ex-Apple designers, ex-Apple camera engineers, and reportedly ex-Apple hardware operations staff, aimed at a category Apple currently dominates. Whether the eventual product is a phone, a companion device, or something in between, the org chart increasingly looks like a rival, not a partner.
OpenAI did not immediately confirm the transaction, and the deal terms come via a single report. The company is also privately held and under no obligation to disclose the price, the closing date, or how the Glass Imaging team will be integrated. There is no guarantee the imaging technology, which was designed for third-party smartphone OEMs, will translate cleanly onto a first-party OpenAI device that does not yet exist publicly.
The bigger question is timing. OpenAI is stockpiling hardware talent — Ive's io, now Glass Imaging, and reportedly more — well ahead of any shipping product. Every acquisition raises the internal cost of not shipping, and raises external expectations of what the first device has to be. At $300 million for a camera-software team and $6.5 billion for a design studio, OpenAI has now spent close to $7 billion assembling a hardware company that has not sold a single unit. The pressure to justify that bill is going to shape whatever ships first.
