OpenAI is hiring a San Francisco-based product manager to build ChatGPT experiences for families, caregivers, and older adults, a job posting that reframes the product from a personal assistant into household software. The move lands as the share of ChatGPT users aged 35 and older globally climbed to 31% in Q2, up from 26% a year earlier, according to Sensor Tower estimates. Over the same stretch, the 18-to-24 cohort slipped to 29% from 34%. ChatGPT is aging up, and OpenAI is now staffing against it.

The role calls for experience building products for parents, families, and other trust-sensitive consumer experiences. That framing is a departure from OpenAI's original pitch of an individual productivity tool. Nearly one in four US smartphone users who are parents used ChatGPT during Q2, up from 16% a year earlier, Sensor Tower estimates. The parent segment is now large enough to design against directly.

Gemini still leads the parent segment. Among US smartphone users who are parents, Google's Gemini reached 32% in Q2, ahead of ChatGPT at 24%, Anthropic's Claude at 4%, and Microsoft's Copilot at 2%. But ChatGPT is closing on older cohorts faster than rivals. The share of users aged 45 and above rose 3 percentage points year-over-year for ChatGPT, versus 2 points for Copilot and outright declines for Claude and Gemini.

Key facts

  • 01OpenAI is hiring a San Francisco-based product manager to build ChatGPT experiences for families, caregivers, and older adults.
  • 02Sensor Tower estimates the share of ChatGPT users 35 and older rose to 31% globally in Q2, up from 26% a year earlier.
  • 0324% of US smartphone-owning parents used ChatGPT in Q2, up from 16% a year earlier; Gemini led the segment at 32%.
  • 0438% of children said they used generative AI in the past week, versus 27% of parents who thought their child had.
  • 05ChatGPT's share of users 45 and older rose 3 points year-over-year, faster than Copilot, Claude, or Gemini.

Ben Bajarin, chief executive of Creative Strategies, said the hire signals OpenAI is beginning to treat its products less as personal tools and more as technology for the household. The comparison he draws is to the platform maturation Google, Apple, and Meta went through, with one caveat: an AI assistant sits closer to the decision than a feed or a device does.

This is similar to the path Google, Apple, and Meta eventually followed as their platforms became embedded in everyday life, but AI raises the stakes because the assistant is not just mediating content or devices
Ben Bajarin, CEO of Creative Strategies

The demographic tilt is not unique to ChatGPT, but the mix is distinctive. Sensor Tower estimates that users aged 25 to 34 account for 40% of the global app audiences for Claude, Gemini, and ChatGPT alike, compared with 33% for Copilot. Copilot skews older overall, with 20% of its users aged 45 and above, versus 14% for Claude, 12% for Gemini, and 11% for ChatGPT. ChatGPT remains relatively underpenetrated among the 45-plus group but is adding them fastest.

The shift also brings a sharper safety surface. Stephen Balkam, chief executive of the Family Online Safety Institute, said AI companies should build products differently for younger users, with stronger content controls, age-appropriate experiences, parental oversight, and reminders that users are interacting with an AI and not a human. He framed the OpenAI hire as a corrective to a product that was not initially designed with children in mind.

I see this as safety by redesign.
Stephen Balkam, CEO of the Family Online Safety Institute

New research this week from the Family Online Safety Institute underscores the gap. In a survey of more than 4,000 families in the United States and Australia, 27% of US parents said their child had used generative AI in the past week, while 38% of children reported doing so themselves. Parents are undercounting their kids' AI use by more than a third.

OpenAI has faced multiple lawsuits from parents alleging that ChatGPT contributed to harm suffered by their children, including cases involving suicide. The company has rolled out parental controls for teen accounts, routing for sensitive conversations to reasoning models designed to handle signs of distress, and an optional Trusted Contact feature that can alert a family member or caregiver in cases of potential self-harm. The family product manager will inherit that stack and be expected to extend it.

The company has also begun testing family-adjacent programming outside the app. In a recent workshop with the San Antonio Spurs Community Impact organization and the Positive Coaching Alliance, OpenAI said it wanted to explore AI's role in learning, coaching, and youth engagement. That is the kind of ground-level distribution work consumer platforms typically do once they realize households, not individuals, are the unit of adoption.

The counterweight is regulatory and reputational. Social platforms spent a decade treating children roughly as adults before adding stronger safeguards under public and regulatory pressure, and AI companies are being told, in real time, not to repeat that sequence. A dedicated family PM narrows the excuse window: once the org chart says a specific person owns child and teen experiences, every future incident lands on a named owner. Balkam's phrase for the shift, safety by redesign, is a demand as much as a description.

OpenAI hiring for families is the clearest signal yet that consumer AI is moving from single-seat productivity into shared-account software, with the pricing, profile, and control implications that follow. Expect family plans, child and teen profiles, caregiver tools, shared household memory, and AI tutoring to become table stakes across ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude, and Copilot within the next 12 months. Whoever gets the parental-controls layer right first captures the household, and the household is where recurring subscription revenue actually compounds. The competitive question is no longer which model is smartest; it is which product a parent will let a nine-year-old open.
