Salesforce buys AI customer service platform Fin for $3.6B

Salesforce will acquire Fin, the AI customer service platform formerly known as Intercom, for roughly $3.6 billion, the company said Monday. The deal is expected to close in the fourth quarter of Salesforce's fiscal 2027, which falls in the first few months of 2027 under the company's reporting calendar. Fin's technology will plug into Agentforce, Salesforce's flagship platform for deploying autonomous AI agents inside the enterprise.

Fin's core product is an AI agent that resolves customer queries across live chat, email, WhatsApp, SMS, phone, and Slack. It runs on Apex, Fin's proprietary model, and is paired with Operator, the internal agent Fin uses to run its own business. Both assets transfer to Salesforce in the deal.

Marc Benioff framed the acquisition as a bid to widen Agentforce's service footprint as enterprise buyers move from copilots to fully autonomous agents. Salesforce is positioning Fin as a way to shorten deployment cycles for customers that want a working service agent out of the box rather than one built from scratch on Agentforce primitives.

Fin brings proven agent technology, a deep commitment to customer success, and an incredible AI team that will complement Agentforce with powerful service agent capabilities.

Key facts

  • 01Salesforce will acquire Fin, formerly Intercom, for roughly $3.6 billion, with closing expected in Q4 of Salesforce's fiscal 2027.
  • 02Fin's AI agent runs on its proprietary Apex model and handles chat, email, WhatsApp, SMS, phone, and Slack queries.
  • 03The deal is dwarfed by Salesforce's $27 billion Slack acquisition, which closed in 2021.
  • 04Salesforce shares have shed more than a third of their value in 2026 amid concerns that AI threatens its SaaS model.
  • 05Fin CEO Eoghan McCabe will stay on, and co-founder Des Traynor will continue to lead R&D.

The price tag is meaningful but well short of Salesforce's largest deal. The Slack acquisition, which closed in 2021, was valued at more than $27 billion. Against that benchmark, $3.6 billion for Fin reads as a tuck-in for a specific product gap rather than a strategic reset.

Eoghan McCabe, who took Intercom through a rebrand to Fin to mark its pivot to AI, said he will remain CEO of the unit, with co-founder Des Traynor continuing to run R&D. Fin started as Intercom 15 years ago.

The context for the deal is uncomfortable. Salesforce shares have shed more than a third of their value in 2026 as investors weigh whether AI agents will compress seat-based SaaS pricing or replace traditional CRM workflows entirely. Buying Fin is Benioff's answer: own more of the agent stack rather than risk being disintermediated by it.

In Salesforce's most recent quarter, the company beat Wall Street estimates but missed on backlog, a closely watched leading indicator. Speaking on Jim Cramer's Mad Money on Feb. 25, 2026, Benioff pushed back on the AI disruption narrative, pointing to record first-quarter transaction volume and what he said was strong AI-driven growth at Slack.

The agentic AI category is now a contested one. OpenAI, Anthropic, Microsoft, and Google are all pushing agent frameworks at the platform level, while startups including Sierra and Decagon target the customer service vertical specifically. Fin's installed base and channel coverage give Salesforce a defensible position in service, the single largest workload inside most CRM deployments.

The risk is integration. Layering Fin's Apex model and Operator agent into Agentforce without breaking either product, while keeping Fin's existing customers from churning during the handover, is the kind of work that has tripped up prior Salesforce acquisitions. McCabe's commitment to stay reduces but does not eliminate that risk, and the close is still two quarters away.

For Salesforce, the strategic message is that the company intends to be a buyer in the agentic AI consolidation now underway, not just a builder. With its multiple compressed and its core product under question, acquiring a working AI service agent for $3.6 billion is cheaper than rebuilding one and faster than waiting for Agentforce adoption to catch up. The next test is whether the combined product can hold pricing against agent-native rivals that never carried a SaaS price book in the first place.
