Superhuman is acquiring Fathom, the Y Combinator-backed AI notetaker with over 400,000 monthly active users, folding meeting-capture directly into its productivity suite. Fathom had raised more than $30 million to date and carried a $94 million valuation in 2024, according to PitchBook. The deal gives Superhuman a finished notetaker to plug into its 40 million-user base rather than building one from scratch.
Superhuman CEO Shishir Mehrotra confirmed the company tested a notetaker internally earlier this year with select users before deciding to buy. Fathom, founded in 2020, has recorded meetings for more than 1 million people on the strength of a generous free plan. Its investors include Zoom Apps Fund, Telescope Partners, BoxOne Ventures, and Maven Ventures, alongside individual backers Steve Huffman of Reddit, former Twitch CEO Emmett Shear, and Cruise co-founder Kyle Vogt.
The strategic logic is straightforward: meetings are where work gets decided, and a productivity platform that watches meetings can trigger the next step without waiting for a user to type a prompt. Superhuman already ships an email client, a docs app, a calendar, a database tool, and a recently launched AI agent builder. A notetaker in the middle lets its agents draft follow-up emails, update records, and schedule the next meeting from the transcript automatically.

Mehrotra said the internal build confirmed how deep the category actually is once you get past the surface demo.
He added that Superhuman was impressed by specific technical work from the Fathom team, though he declined to specify which pieces. He teased that the combined product would surface meeting context in real time — a step beyond the standard post-meeting summary that most notetakers ship today.
Fathom CEO Richard White framed the deal as a distribution shortcut. Superhuman's 40 million users dwarf what a standalone notetaker can realistically reach, and Fathom would have had to rebuild adjacent surfaces — mail, calendar, docs — that Superhuman already operates.

The notetaker market is crowded and getting more so. Granola, Read AI, and newer entrant Wispr have each raised tens of millions to compete, and the pressure on venture-backed notetakers to expand beyond transcription is intense. Standalone notetakers with real revenue are increasingly being squeezed to prove they are platforms, not features — which makes acquisition by a larger productivity player an obvious exit.
Financial terms were not disclosed. At a $94 million last-round mark and $30 million-plus raised, Fathom sits in the tuck-in range for a private acquirer building out its stack rather than a headline-grabbing outcome.
The unknown is retention of the free-plan user base, which is a big share of Fathom's 400,000 monthly actives. Superhuman is a paid product with a premium reputation; how it treats Fathom's free tier will determine whether the 1 million-plus recorded-meeting audience follows the product or looks for the next free notetaker.
The deal fits a pattern taking shape across AI productivity: the platforms with distribution are buying the vertical AI features rather than waiting to build them, because the window on agentic workflows is closing fast. Meeting data is the highest-signal input a work agent can get, and whoever owns that pipe owns the trigger for the next action. Superhuman just bought its trigger.
