Anthropic launches Claude Docs and Slides to challenge Google's Gemini

Claude now generates shareable documents and presentations from any chat, closing the productivity-suite gap with Google Workspace.

Anthropic launched Claude Docs and Claude Slides in beta on September 16, moving Claude into direct competition with Google Workspace by letting users generate, edit, and share documents and presentations from inside any chat. The rollout also collapses regular Claude chats and Cowork into a single interface, folding Artifacts and Claude Design into the same surface. Pro and Max subscribers get access first on web, desktop, and mobile over the next few weeks, with Team and Free tiers following later.

The productivity push is a clear shot at Gemini, which Google has been embedding across Docs, Sheets, and Slides earlier this year. Google's advantage in this category has never been the model — Anthropic's frontier systems generally test ahead — but the fact that Gemini lives natively inside the world's most-used office suite. Claude Docs and Slides are Anthropic's first serious attempt to remove that structural moat.

The unified interface is the connective tissue. Users no longer need to switch between chat modes to get to different tools; Claude routes the task based on what the user asks for.

can now figure out what a task needs, so what Cowork and Design can do is available from any conversation, with the context, skills, and connectors you already have.

Key facts

  • 01Anthropic launched Claude Docs and Claude Slides in beta on September 16, 2026, letting users generate and edit documents and presentations inside Claude chats.
  • 02The update collapses regular chats and Cowork into a single interface, with Artifacts and Claude Design capabilities also accessible from any conversation.
  • 03Claude Docs support real-time collaboration and inline comments, mirroring the shared-editing model of Google Docs.
  • 04The 'one Claude' rollout hits Pro and Max users on web, desktop, and mobile over the next few weeks, with Team and Free tiers following later.
  • 05Google expanded Gemini earlier this year across Docs, Sheets, and Slides — the launch directly targets that integration advantage.

Claude Docs behave like a familiar collaborative document. Files start private and can be shared with other editors who work on them simultaneously, and collaborators — including Claude itself — can leave inline comments that resemble the ones threaded through a Google Doc. Claude Slides works the same way for presentations: generate a deck by asking for one, then edit it directly or ask Claude to revise it.

The output layer is deliberately mobile-friendly. Anthropic pitched this as an antidote to the friction of jumping from a Claude chat into a separate app to finish work.

Anthropic tied the whole thing to a single shareable link that opens on any device.

Anything you make with Claude Design, Slides, or Docs lives at one shareable link you can open on your phone.

Whether the strategy sticks depends on distribution. Google Workspace has billions of active users across Gmail, Docs, and Drive, and Gemini reaches them by default. Claude reaches its users when they open the Claude app or paste into the Claude API — a much smaller top of funnel. Adding Docs and Slides gives existing Claude users fewer reasons to leave, but it does not automatically pull Workspace users away from a suite they already pay for and share files through.

The bet is that model quality plus a coherent workspace can retain the highest-value users — engineers, analysts, consultants, founders — who care more about output than about being inside the same document as their finance department. That is the segment where Anthropic's revenue actually comes from, and it is the segment where Claude's reasoning advantage is most visible.

There are open questions. The beta label matters: collaborative editing is notoriously hard to get right, and neither Docs nor Slides has been tested at Workspace scale. Enterprise customers will want admin controls, retention policies, and audit trails before treating a Claude Doc the same way they treat a Google Doc. Anthropic has not yet detailed those.

The launch reframes what a chat interface is supposed to be. If Claude can do the document creation, the slide-building, the design work, and the collaborative editing without the user ever leaving the conversation, the chat window stops being a separate tool and starts being the workspace. That is the same wager Microsoft made when it bolted Copilot into Word and Excel, and the same one Google is making with Gemini in Workspace — Anthropic is just approaching it from the model side rather than the suite side. Whether that works comes down to whether users would rather bring documents to their AI or bring AI to their documents.
