The Agentic AI Foundation, the Linux Foundation group co-founded by Anthropic, Block and OpenAI, said Thursday it has taken on four new open-source projects, including Anthropic's Agent Skills standard and OpenAI's Open Responses specification. The additions, announced at AGNTCon + MCPCon North America in San Jose, bring the foundation to 10 hosted projects, up from three at its December 2025 launch.
“A year ago, AAIF launched with three projects and a bet that agentic AI needed a neutral home to thrive.”— Manik Surtani, CTO and co-founder of the Agentic AI Foundation
The other two newcomers are OpenEnv, contributed by Hugging Face, and OpenSandbox, contributed by Alibaba. They join a roster that already includes A2A, Agent Router, agentgateway, AGENTS.md, goose and the Model Context Protocol, which Anthropic donated to the foundation earlier.
Agent Skills packages instructions, scripts and reference material that an agent loads only when it needs them. A skill is a folder containing a SKILL.md file plus whatever supporting files it requires. Anthropic developed the format while building Claude Code, launched skills in October 2025, and published the format as an open standard in December 2025 under its own GitHub organization and domain.
“Without the right context, even the most intelligent agents fall short.”— David Soria Parra, Co-Creator and Lead Maintainer of MCP, Anthropic
Key facts
- 01The Agentic AI Foundation added Agent Skills, Open Responses, OpenEnv and OpenSandbox on October 22, 2026.
- 02AAIF now hosts 10 projects, up from three when it launched in December 2025.
- 03Agent Skills has been integrated by more than 70 platforms, with 1 million skills published and nearly 280 million installed.
- 04Anthropic is handing over the Agent Skills name, logo, GitHub organization and the agentskills.io domain.
- 05The projects came from Anthropic, OpenAI, Hugging Face and Alibaba, announced at AGNTCon + MCPCon North America in San Jose.
Anthropic said more than 70 agent platforms have integrated Agent Skills since then, including ChatGPT, Cursor, GitHub Copilot and VS Code, and developers have written loaders for Codex and OpenCode. The company put adoption at 1 million published skills and nearly 280 million installs.
As part of the donation, Anthropic is transferring the Agent Skills name and logo, the GitHub organization and the agentskills.io domain. Engineers from Anthropic, Google, OpenAI and other companies will maintain the standard as individuals, with David Soria Parra and Mahesh Murag as lead maintainers. A proposed roadmap covers versioned releases, a formal proposal process, and security guidance for people who write and install skills. Developers can use or contribute to the standard without joining AAIF.
Open Responses, OpenAI's contribution, is an open specification for interoperable interfaces across model providers, based on the OpenAI Responses API. It defines a shared schema, consistent streaming events and extensible tooling, so developers can write a request once and run it against different providers.
OpenEnv is a framework and community hub for building reinforcement learning environments that can be shared and scaled. It runs as a containerized service exposing an agent interface, MCP and the Gym training protocol. The Linux Foundation named Hugging Face, Microsoft, Reflection, Meta-PyTorch, Fleet, Mercor, RadixArk, Modal and Prime Intellect as organizations behind the OpenEnv committee.
“We believe, now more than ever, that democratizing AI requires a fully open stack.”— Ben Burtenshaw, Machine Learning Engineer, Hugging Face
OpenSandbox, from Alibaba, is a general-purpose sandbox platform for AI applications with multi-language SDKs, unified sandbox APIs, and Docker and Kubernetes runtimes. It targets coding agents, GUI agents, agent evaluation, AI code execution and RL training, and includes a sandbox protocol defining lifecycle and execution APIs so teams can plug in custom runtimes.
Anthropic said it is committed to keeping Agent Skills open, community-driven and vendor-neutral, and that feedback on specification changes is open to the community through the project's Discord.
