Google bolts forum quotes onto AI Overviews to fight hallucinations

AI Overviews will now preview perspectives from Reddit, social posts, and other firsthand sources, with creator handles attached.

Google is rewiring AI Overviews to surface quoted perspectives from Reddit, social media, and other firsthand web sources, with creator names, handles, and community labels attached to each citation. The change, announced May 6, 2026, is Google's most visible attempt to patch the credibility problem that has shadowed AI Overviews since the feature launched two years ago. It lands after a New York Times analysis pegged the accuracy of AI Overviews at nine times out of 10.

That number sounds respectable until it meets Google's scale. The company processes trillions of queries a year, which means a 10% miss rate translates into hundreds of thousands of inaccurate results every minute. For a product positioned at the top of the search results page, ahead of the blue links users have trusted for two decades, that error budget is uncomfortable.

Google's fix is to lean on the very forums users were already turning to. There is a reason people append "Reddit" to their Google queries, and Google now wants to bring those discussions inside the AI answer rather than send users elsewhere to find them. The update will preview firsthand opinions next to the AI-generated summary, with metadata so readers can see who is talking and where.

Key facts

  • 01Google is updating AI Overviews to embed previews of public discussions from Reddit, social media, and other firsthand sources.
  • 02A recent New York Times analysis found AI Overviews were correct nine times out of 10.
  • 03Google processes trillions of queries a year, meaning a 10% error rate translates to hundreds of thousands of bad answers per minute.
  • 04Citations will now show creator names, handles, and community names so users can judge the source.
  • 05AI Overviews launched two years ago and previously cited The Onion and a Reddit glue-on-pizza joke as factual.

"For many searches, people are increasingly seeking out advice from others," Google said in its announcement. "To help you find the most helpful insights to explore further, AI responses will now include a preview of perspectives from public online discussions, social media, and other firsthand sources. We're also adding more context to these links, like a creator's name, handle, or community name, to help you decide which discussions you might want to read or participate in."

At a 9-in-10 accuracy rate across trillions of queries a year, hundreds of thousands of Google searches return wrong answers every minute.

The pivot complicates what AI Overviews are actually for. The original promise was a direct answer at the top of the page. Wrapping that answer in a panel of forum quotes pushes the product back toward something that looks a lot like a list of links, the format AI Overviews were meant to replace. Google is hedging on whether the box should resolve a question or curate the conversation around it.

The history of AI Overviews explains the caution. Early versions cited The Onion when telling a user to eat one small rock per day, and pulled a Reddit joke recommending glue on pizza to keep cheese in place. Those screenshots traveled, and they continue to anchor public memory of the feature even as Google has hardened the underlying systems.

Adding creator handles and community names is a real improvement, because it gives users the information they need to discount a satirical post or a low-karma comment. It also mirrors the way ChatGPT and Claude have leaned harder on inline citations to back their claims, an industry-wide concession that large language models cannot be trusted to carry assertions on their own authority.

The catch is that citations only help if users check them, and AI Overviews exist precisely so users do not have to. There is also no guarantee the model is summarizing the linked discussion accurately. Hallucinated citations, where the link is real but the quoted content is not, remain a documented failure mode across every major chatbot, and Google is not exempt.

The forum-quote feature also raises a question Google has not answered: what happens to the publishers and forum owners whose content is being previewed inside the AI box. Reddit has a paid licensing deal with Google, but smaller communities and independent blogs do not, and a previewed quote is a substitute for a click in many cases. The economics of that trade are still being argued in court and in contracts.

Skeptics, including TechCrunch's Amanda Silberling, point out that pulling in random forum voices is not obviously a fix for hallucination. It can compound the problem if the underlying discussion is wrong, sarcastic, or coordinated. The glue-on-pizza incident was, after all, a Reddit citation. Better labeling helps; it does not eliminate the failure mode that produced the meme in the first place.

For Google, the calculus is competitive. Perplexity, ChatGPT search, and Anthropic's Claude have all built reputations on transparent sourcing, and Google cannot afford to look like the AI search product with the weakest citations. Bolting forum perspectives onto AI Overviews is a defensive move dressed up as a feature, and at trillions of queries a year, even a marginal accuracy gain is worth a redesign.
