Reddit CEO Steve Huffman used his quarterly earnings appearance to publicly challenge the value of Google's AI Overviews feature, telling investors the automated search summaries have yet to deliver the ecosystem benefits that traditional blue-link results provided. Reddit shares fell more than 20% after the report, even though the company beat expectations on most of the basic financials. The stock reaction was driven by what Huffman called 'choppy' search referrals — and by growing investor doubt about whether content businesses can survive Google's shift to AI summarization.
The backdrop is a $60 million licensing deal between Reddit and Google that Reddit is now considering ending, according to a Wall Street Journal report earlier this month. That same report named The Economist, Reuters, Politico, and USA Today as publishers weighing similar exits. Reddit also has a separate licensing arrangement with OpenAI, giving it some optionality on which AI platforms get access to its human-generated content.
In a letter to investors, Huffman framed Reddit as the counterweight to a web increasingly filled with machine-generated text. He argued that as AI floods the internet with synthetic content, users are gravitating toward first-hand accounts, opinion, and debate — the material Reddit's forums have historically produced. The positioning is deliberate: Reddit wants to be priced as an irreplaceable data source, not a commodity publisher.
Key facts
- 01Reddit shares fell more than 20% after earnings despite beating investor expectations on most financials, driven by 'choppy' search referrals.
- 02CEO Steve Huffman publicly questioned the value of Google AI Overviews, saying the feature has yet to deliver benefits comparable to traditional links.
- 03Reddit is considering ending its $60M licensing deal with Google, per a Wall Street Journal report earlier this month.
- 04A Pew Research study of 900 US adults found AI Overviews cut referrals to publisher sites by almost half versus the '10 blue links' format.
- 05Other publishers reportedly weighing exits from Google deals include The Economist, Reuters, Politico, and USA Today.
The financial pressure is real. A Pew Research study last year, based on data from 900 US adults, concluded that AI Overviews cut referrals to sites by almost half compared to the traditional 10 blue links. Reddit, like most large publishers, has historically depended on Google search traffic to sustain user growth and engagement. If AI Overviews absorb the answer without sending the click, the traffic side of Reddit's business erodes even as its data-licensing side grows.
Huffman was direct in his comments around the earnings report. He acknowledged the historical value of Google's traditional search product to the broader web, and drew a pointed contrast with what AI Overviews has delivered so far. He described the current arrangement between AI-search products and content businesses as one still searching for a mutual upside.
Google disputes the underlying premise. Responding to the Pew study, the company said the research relied on a flawed methodology and a queryset unrepresentative of actual search traffic. In a subsequent blog post, Google added that total organic click volume from Google Search to websites has been relatively stable year-over-year — a claim that contradicts what many publishers have reported privately, though most are unwilling to share proprietary traffic numbers publicly.
Part of the friction is structural. Publishers and Reddit have historically had no way to opt into being a blue link while opting out of being source material for AI Overviews — the two are treated as a package. Last year, Cloudflare pushed to update the default configuration for robots.txt in part to force Google to separate the two. Google has since said it has adjusted AI Overviews to display more prominent outbound links, but the company continues to insist the feature is a net positive for users and the web.
“This study uses a flawed methodology and skewed queryset that is not representative of Search traffic. We consistently direct billions of clicks to websites daily and have not observed significant drops in aggregate web traffic as is being suggested.”— Google, company statement
Reddit's revenue and engagement metrics remain strong on paper — the quarter trounced expectations on the basic financials, which is why the stock's 20% drop is so telling. Investors are looking past current numbers and pricing in a future where Google referrals continue to compress. That concern extends well beyond Reddit to essentially every organization producing content for the open web. Advance Publications, parent of Condé Nast, is Reddit's largest shareholder, which underscores how directly the traditional publishing world is exposed to this shift.
The unresolved question is whether licensing revenue can grow fast enough to offset referral decline. A $60 million Google deal and a separate OpenAI arrangement are meaningful, but they are single-digit percentages of a business the size of Reddit. If Huffman does walk away from the Google deal, it would be a bet that Reddit's data is scarce enough to command better terms elsewhere — and that human-authored discussion is the one input AI models cannot cheaply replace.
Reddit's public complaint is the clearest sign yet that the content-and-search détente that funded the open web for two decades is breaking. The company is trying to reprice itself as an AI-training input rather than a search-referral destination, and the market's 20% haircut suggests investors are not yet convinced the new business model clears the bar of the old one. Whichever way Reddit resolves the Google deal, the read-through for every other publisher is the same: the traffic side is shrinking faster than the licensing side is growing, and no one has yet built the win-win Huffman is asking for.
