Google plugs Instacart, Canva, and YouTube into AI Mode search

AI Mode moves from answering questions to executing tasks, matching integration features already shipping in ChatGPT and Claude.

Google is turning AI Mode into an execution layer. The company said Thursday that its conversational search experience can now link directly to Instacart, Canva, and YouTube, letting users complete tasks inside those apps without leaving the search flow. It is the clearest sign yet that Google wants AI Mode to be a place where things get done, not just answered.

The mechanics are straightforward. Ask AI Mode to build a barbecue grocery list, connect an Instacart account, and the ingredients drop into a shopping cart ready for checkout. Ask for flyer design ideas, and Canva returns a set of templates. Ask for a party playlist, and the results save to YouTube Music. The rollout is live in the U.S. at launch, with Google saying it is working with additional partners to expand the roster soon.

This is Google closing an integration gap. OpenAI's ChatGPT and Anthropic's Claude both already support third-party app connections, and each has spent the last year making those connections the centerpiece of their consumer story. Without native app hooks, AI Mode was answering questions the way search always has. With them, it starts to look like an agent.

Key facts

  • 01Google added Instacart, Canva, and YouTube as the first third-party apps that link directly into AI Mode.
  • 02The rollout is limited to U.S. users at launch, with additional partners promised in the coming months.
  • 03AI Mode debuted in early 2025 and has since gained in-stock inventory checks and side-by-side web browsing.
  • 04The update mirrors Gemini app integrations announced at Google I/O earlier this year with Canva, OpenTable, Spark, and Instacart.
  • 05The move puts AI Mode on integration parity with ChatGPT and Claude, both of which already support connected apps.

AI Mode launched in early 2025 and has been picking up capabilities steadily. Google recently added an inventory-check feature that surfaces whether a product is in stock at a nearby store, plus a side-by-side web browsing view that lets users compare pages and ask follow-up questions while preserving search context. Earlier this year the company also added Personal Intelligence, which pulls signals from Gmail and Google Photos into AI Mode responses.

Thursday's news also extends work Google showed at Google I/O earlier this year, when it announced that the Gemini app would support third-party integrations including Canva, OpenTable, Spark, and Instacart. The AI Mode launch takes that same integration model and drops it into the search product used by a materially larger audience. It is the difference between a Gemini power-user feature and a mainstream default.

The partner selection is telling. Instacart covers grocery and household commerce. Canva covers creative and small-business workflows. YouTube covers Google's own entertainment surface, which conveniently sidesteps the awkward question of whether a rival could plug into search. Together they sketch out the three verticals Google most wants AI Mode to own: shopping, creation, and media.

Missing from the initial list are the categories where integration would meaningfully change buyer behavior — travel booking, restaurant reservations, financial services, ticketing. OpenTable is available in Gemini but not yet in AI Mode. Google said more apps are coming, and the practical test will be how quickly the partner list expands beyond friendly launch partners into the transactional categories where users actually spend money.

There is also a distribution advantage worth naming. Search is Google's home turf, with a user base that dwarfs any standalone chatbot. Every capability that ships in AI Mode compounds against a base of users who already open Google reflexively. ChatGPT and Claude have to convince users to change their habits; Google can add features to the habit users already have.

The counterweight is execution risk. Third-party integrations rely on partner APIs, cart handoffs, and account-linking flows that need to work cleanly across billions of queries. Google has not disclosed how the handoff performs at scale, and past AI features — from AI Overviews to Personal Intelligence — have shipped with rough edges before settling in. Users will judge the feature by whether the Instacart cart actually loads, not by the launch announcement.

For AI Mode, the bigger question is whether users start thinking of Google search as a place where tasks end instead of a place where research begins. That behavioral shift, if it happens, is what turns AI Mode from a defensive product against ChatGPT into an offensive one. The integrations announced Thursday are the first ingredient. The next several partner adds — and how transactional they get — will decide whether Google converts its search moat into an agent moat, or whether AI Mode stays a nicer version of the old blue-link page.
