Google's AI Mode reached 1 billion monthly users in May 2026, with usage doubling every quarter since launch, the company revealed at I/O 2026. The search product now accounts for a material share of Google's total query volume, driven by conversational follow-ups that count as discrete searches and aggressive product placement nudging users toward the chatbot interface.

Google search is AI search.
Liz Reid, Google VP of Search

Google VP of Search Liz Reid announced the biggest search box redesign in the company's 25-year history, rolling out globally today. The new box expands dynamically as users type and uses Gemini to autocomplete queries based on user context and intent. AI Overviews now appear on most searches, with a new desktop-and-mobile transition feature that lets users jump seamlessly from an Overview into full AI Mode.

The shift is part of a broader agentic overhaul powered by Gemini 3.5 Flash and Google's Antigravity agent framework. Starting this summer, Search will generate custom interactive UIs in response to certain queries, including single-shot simulations for concepts like the golden ratio or black hole behavior. A separate AI Mode feature will build full-fledged custom apps on demand for tasks like planning a family outing, pulling data from Google's platform and external sources into a shareable dashboard with calendar integration and map embeds.

Key facts

  • 01AI Mode reached 1 billion monthly users with usage doubling every quarter since launch.
  • 02Google rolled out the biggest search box redesign in its 25-year history, using Gemini to autocomplete queries.
  • 03New agentic search features powered by Gemini 3.5 Flash will generate custom apps and interactive UIs starting this summer.
  • 04AI Overviews now appear on most Google searches, with a new seamless transition to AI Mode across desktop and mobile.

Early demos showed the generated code as it built these apps, but Google is likely to hide the code at launch to avoid confusing casual users. Users can revisit and modify the apps through AI Mode history, and shared links let recipients customize the app to their own preferences. Google is exploring manual line-by-line code editing and shared modifications in future iterations.

The agentic features lean on Gemini 3.5 Flash's efficiency gains, with Gemini 3.5 Pro expected to further improve agent performance when it ships, possibly before the agentic search rollout completes. The broader pattern is fewer traditional search results and more AI-generated interfaces occupying the space where organic links once dominated.

Google's AI push faces vocal criticism from users accustomed to the 10-blue-links model, but the company is betting on engagement metrics over user sentiment. AI Mode's conversational design inflates query counts by design, and prominent placement ensures the product surfaces even when users don't explicitly seek it. The new AI Overview nudge now hovers at the bottom of the Overview itself, obscuring the top organic results and further steering users away from traditional web listings.

Competitors like DuckDuckGo, Bing, and Brave continue to capture negligible market share despite a year of Google's AI overhaul. Google treats its continued dominance as validation that the AI-first approach is the correct path, regardless of external objections.

The agentic search rollout positions Google squarely in the conversational-interface race alongside OpenAI's ChatGPT and Anthropic's Claude, but with a structural advantage: Google owns the distribution channel that captures the majority of global search intent. The question is no longer whether Google will remake search around AI, but how quickly the company can shift user behavior away from the traditional web and into generated interfaces that keep users inside Google's ecosystem. The 1-billion-user milestone suggests the shift is already well underway.
