OpenAI doubled the Work and Codex usage allowances on its ChatGPT Pro 100 and Pro 500 plans on October 29, 2026, and canceled a planned reduction to its Pro 200 plan that was set to take effect the same day. Prices on all three Pro tiers did not change.
Pro 200 subscribers who had already been moved to the lower allowance had it doubled to match the higher one, and those still on the higher allowance keep it. Existing subscribers get the new limits automatically, without waiting for renewal. OpenAI posted the change in its ChatGPT release notes and on its Pro tiers help page.
Business Premium seats, priced at $100 per user per month billed annually or $125 billed monthly, are also getting more usage. OpenAI's release notes describe Business Premium usage as increasing without giving a figure.
Key facts
- 01OpenAI doubled the Work and Codex allowance on its $100 Pro 100 and $500 Pro 500 plans on October 29, 2026.
- 02A planned reduction to the $200 Pro 200 plan, due October 29, was canceled; lower-allowance accounts were doubled to match.
- 03Business Premium usage is increasing; seats cost $100 per user per month billed annually or $125 monthly.
- 04Prices on all Pro tiers are unchanged, and Plus at $20 a month keeps its current usage.
Thibault Sottiaux, who leads Codex at OpenAI, announced the change on X and said the company would not go ahead with the Pro 200 reduction after hearing from subscribers.
“We are doubling all usage limits for all Pro 100/200/500 tiers and Business Premium, effective today.”— Thibault Sottiaux, Codex lead at OpenAI
The reversal closes out a two-month episode. On September 10, OpenAI paused new Pro 200 sign-ups. On September 29, alongside the launch of the $500 Pro 500 tier, it reopened Pro 200 with a lower included allowance and emailed existing subscribers that they would keep their old allowance through October 29 before moving to the lower level at the same price.
OpenAI never stated publicly how much lower the new Pro 200 allowance would be. Coverage of the September change described it as moving Pro 200's Work and Codex allowance from 20 times the Plus level to 10 times. The Pro tiers help page now says the reduction announced in the September 29 email is canceled.
Some limits stay where they were. Plus usage at $20 a month is unchanged, Ultrafast access remains exclusive to Pro 500, and weekly GPT-6 Pro message limits in Chat hold steady on Pro 100 and Pro 500, while lower-limit Pro 200 accounts move up to match the higher one.
ChatGPT Work and Codex draw from a single usage pool, with Work handling longer tasks and Codex serving as OpenAI's coding agent. Fast mode consumes the allowance at 2.5 times the Standard rate, and Ultrafast on GPT-6 Astra and GPT-6.1 Sol consumes it at 8 times.
OpenAI's help page also cautions that "A larger allowance does not guarantee twice as many completed tasks," since consumption depends on the model, the task and the speed mode.
