Amazon adds 'Join the chat' audio Q&A to product pages across millions of listings

Amazon on Tuesday turned its product pages into a two-way audio conversation, launching 'Join the chat,' a feature that lets shoppers ask spoken or typed questions about a listing and get real-time answers from what the company calls 'AI-powered shopping experts.' The capability sits inside the Amazon Shopping app and runs on top of 'Hear the highlights,' an existing audio summary feature available on millions of product pages in the U.S. It is Amazon's most direct push yet to replace scrolling through reviews with a conversation.

The format is deliberate. A shopper opens a product page, taps the 'Hear the highlights' button under the product image, and can either listen to a short overview or tap into 'Join the chat' to ask follow-ups. The audio keeps playing while the user browses elsewhere in the app, which mirrors how podcast listeners multitask.

Amazon says the system builds on prior answers rather than restarting each turn, and is tuned not to repeat itself. 'Customers can ask questions and actually steer where the conversation goes,' the company wrote in a blog post announcing the feature. 'Every question they ask influences what comes next, making the experience a conversation customers can join and customize.'

Key facts

  • 01Amazon launched 'Join the chat' on Tuesday, April 28, 2026, adding real-time audio Q&A to product listings.
  • 02The feature lives inside 'Hear the highlights,' which spans millions of product pages in the Amazon Shopping app.
  • 03Hear the highlights began testing in May 2025 and is currently available only in the U.S. on select products.
  • 04Amazon describes the voices as 'AI-powered shopping experts' that build on prior answers without repeating themselves.
  • 05Join the chat extends a stack that already includes Rufus, Interests, and Help me decide.

The example use cases Amazon highlighted are pragmatic rather than flashy: asking whether a coffee maker is beginner-friendly, or whether a sweater feels itchy based on customer reviews. The pitch is that the AI synthesizes product specs and review sentiment into something closer to advice from a store employee, without the shopper having to read 400 reviews to find the three that matter.

Hear the highlights itself is not new. It began testing in May 2025 and remains U.S.-only, with audio summaries available only on select products. Join the chat is the interactive layer Amazon has now bolted on top, turning a passive listen into a steerable Q&A.

The feature joins a growing stack of AI shopping tools inside Amazon's app. Rufus, Amazon's generative assistant, handles product research and comparisons. Interests tracks a shopper's preferences and surfaces matching items over time. 'Help me decide' recommends products based on searches, browsing, and purchase history. Join the chat is the audio-first sibling to all three.

The competitive frame is worth noting. Google and OpenAI have spent the past year pushing conversational shopping into general-purpose chat products, with ChatGPT building out its own commerce surfaces and Google folding shopping into Gemini. Amazon's counter is to keep the conversation inside the buying funnel itself, on the page where the cart button lives.

There are obvious caveats. The feature only works on listings Amazon has chosen to enable, the U.S.-only constraint limits reach, and review-grounded AI answers are only as good as the underlying review corpus, which remains a fight Amazon has not fully won against fake and incentivized ratings. The company has not disclosed which model powers Join the chat or how it sources its summaries, and Amazon did not say when international rollout begins or how broadly the feature will expand beyond select products.

For Amazon, the strategic logic is straightforward. Every minute a shopper spends arguing with ChatGPT about which coffee maker to buy is a minute spent outside the Amazon app, where the purchase eventually happens but the discovery does not. Wiring a capable, voice-driven assistant directly into the product page is how Amazon keeps that top-of-funnel decision-making on its own surface, with its own data, and one tap from checkout. Whether shoppers actually want to talk to their listings, or whether 'Join the chat' ends up as another buried button alongside Rufus and Interests, is the question the next few quarters will answer.
