Whether that helps depends on what's being searched. For a query like "blue t-shirt," generating a fake image adds nothing — there are already millions of real listings. The value sits on the long tail, where a shopper knows what they want when they see it but can't keyword their way there.

The images themselves are not products. Nothing in the generated render is for sale; the tap is a shortcut into Amazon's existing catalog of real listings. That distinction matters because the broader e-commerce industry is still working out how customers should feel about AI-generated imagery sitting next to live inventory.
Amazon is also shipping a separate "shop by style" feature that works the other way around. Search for denim shorts and the app returns AI-generated collages styling those shorts into full outfits — but the clothing inside the collage is real. Shoppers can buy any of the pictured items, which makes the collage closer to a styled lookbook than a hallucinated catalog.
Google rolled out a comparable capability in AI Mode last year, generating fake outfits and decor pieces to anchor lookalike product searches. The competitive shape is now clear: the search-and-discovery layer of shopping is being rebuilt around generated imagery, with the actual transaction happening downstream on real SKUs.
Other retailers are taking a different route, plugging directly into Gemini and ChatGPT so customers shop from inside a chatbot rather than visit a storefront. Amazon's approach keeps the shopper inside Amazon's app while borrowing the generative interface, which protects the marketplace's ad and recommendation economics.
There are obvious failure modes. AI-generated images can drift from anything the catalog actually stocks, leaving shoppers chasing a look that doesn't exist on the platform. Amazon hasn't disclosed how it constrains the model to renders that map cleanly to real inventory, or how it handles cases where the closest real match is materially different from the generated picture.

For Amazon, the business question is whether generated previews lift conversion on hard-to-describe queries enough to justify the inference cost and the brand risk of mislabeled lookalikes. For competitors building AI shopping inside Gemini and ChatGPT, Amazon's bet is a tell: the company is treating the search bar, not the chatbot, as the surface where generative AI changes how people buy.
