Google launched Gemini Spark at I/O 2026, a 24/7 AI agent that runs continuously in the cloud and integrates with Gmail, Drive, Docs, Photos, Search, and more than 30 external partners including Dropbox, Uber, and Spotify. The agent reaches Google's existing base of 900 million monthly Gemini users across 230 countries and 70 languages. Beta access opens in the US next week for Ultra subscribers, following a trusted-tester rollout this week.
Gemini Spark is cloud-based and syncs across web, Android, and iOS, requiring no open laptop to maintain operation. The agent handles standard agentic tasks like shopping research, schedule coordination, and event planning. Google's integration advantage is the depth of access to its own services — Gmail, Drive, and Search — combined with external partner APIs arriving in the coming weeks.
The launch follows OpenClaw's viral success since November. OpenClaw, an open-source AI agent platform, gained millions of users by integrating with WhatsApp and Telegram and running continuously as long as a laptop stayed open. OpenAI acquired OpenClaw in February and hired its creator Peter Steinberger, but the platform remains open-source. Google is now mirroring the core OpenClaw features — long-running background operation, text and email interaction — while adding deeper integration with its own ecosystem.
Key facts
- 01Gemini Spark launches to Google's existing 900 million monthly users across 230 countries and 70 languages.

Google also announced a Daily Brief feature, similar to OpenAI's ChatGPT Pulse, and expanded its Antigravity agentic development platform with a standalone desktop app for agent management. AI search is gaining information agents this summer to perform continuous background research on stock shifts, weather, and other time-sensitive queries.
Gemini 3.5 Flash, the model powering these agents, ships next month with significantly improved coding capabilities over the November release of Gemini 3. The model runs four times faster than competing frontier models and costs less than half the price, in some cases one third. The cost advantage matters for 24/7 agents where token costs accumulate rapidly.
Google's agent strategy leans heavily on existing user scale and vertical integration. The company serves 900 million Gemini users monthly, a base no AI-native startup can match. Compared to OpenAI and Anthropic, which face increasing financial pressure, Google can subsidize agent costs to drive adoption. The company is expanding Antigravity to match OpenAI's and Anthropic's coding tools for non-programmers.
Earlier Google agentic attempts struggled with speed and reliability. By the Gemini 3 release, agents handled some tasks like inbox cleanup but failed at others. Gemini Spark's 24/7 cloud operation and context persistence address those gaps, provided the agent performs reliably at scale.
The competitive frame is whether Google's vertical integration advantage offsets OpenClaw's head start and community momentum. OpenClaw demonstrated that users will adopt agents when the UX is frictionless and the tools integrate with existing workflows. Google has both the distribution and the product surface area — but the product still has to work. If Gemini Spark fails to deliver on reliability at 900 million users, the agent category's promise deflates significantly.
Google's real test is execution at scale with a product millions of users already have installed. OpenClaw proved the agent-adoption model; Google is betting it can out-execute with infrastructure and integration depth. If Google can't make agents useful with Gmail, Search, and 30 external partners baked in, the entire agent narrative needs a reassessment.
