Rivian has added an in-house AI voice assistant to its vehicles in software update 2026.15, rolling out to every owner with a Connect+ subscription or trial. The Rivian Assistant works on both Gen2 vehicles and Gen1 hardware dating back to model-year 2024 and older, an unusually broad backport for an AI feature. The automaker still does not support Apple CarPlay or Android Auto, so the assistant is its answer to the hands-free voice control most drivers get through Siri or Google Assistant via phone mirroring.
Owners trigger the assistant with a steering-wheel button, an icon on the infotainment display, or the wake phrases 'Hey Rivian' and 'OK, Rivian.' Rivian says the system can 'control vehicle settings, climate control, navigation, media, messaging, and calling,' reference the owner's manual, answer general questions, search for information, and explain in-car alerts to help with troubleshooting. It runs inside Rivian's private cloud rather than calling out to a third-party model.
That private-cloud design is the strategic point. Because the assistant lives within Rivian's stack, it has direct hooks into the EV's subsystems, which Rivian compares to the embedded assistants from BMW and Mercedes-Benz. The contrast is with the lighter-touch in-car AI that Google offers automakers running Android Automotive and Google Automotive Services, which is more constrained in what it can actually do to the car.

Backporting the feature to Gen1 vehicles matters for Rivian's relationship with early customers. Many automakers reserve new software for current-generation hardware, leaving earlier buyers behind. Rivian is treating its installed base as a single software fleet, which is consistent with the clean-sheet electronic architecture that anchored Volkswagen Group's $5 billion investment in the company.
That Volkswagen deal is the backdrop for why Rivian's software story is closely watched. The German automaker did not write a $5 billion check for Rivian's trucks; it wrote it for the underlying vehicle software platform, which Volkswagen plans to use across its own lineup. Every shipped feature like the Rivian Assistant is a proof point for that bet, and a hedge against the assumption that automakers must outsource their software layer to Apple, Google, or a model vendor.
Connect+ gating means the assistant is also a recurring-revenue lever. Rivian has not disclosed take rates for Connect+, but tying the AI experience to the subscription gives owners a concrete reason to keep paying after any included trial expires. It mirrors the pattern set by BMW and Mercedes-Benz, which increasingly route advanced infotainment and assistant features through paid connectivity tiers.
Skepticism is to be expected. Ars Technica's Jonathan M. Gitlin noted that 'asking your car by voice to reschedule a meeting or find a spot to eat lunch seems a heck of a lot safer than someone using their smartphone when they should have their hands and eyes on the road,' while acknowledging that some buyers will reject any LLM-based feature on principle. Rivian has not published accuracy benchmarks, hallucination rates, or details on which underlying model powers the assistant, and the deep system access that makes it useful also raises the stakes if it misinterprets a command.
Rivian's move fits a broader pattern in the AI voice assistant space, following Google's recent rebrand of premium Gemini features for Android and its Rambler dictation rollout inside Gboard. The Rivian Assistant is the automotive instantiation of the same trend: voice-first AI is becoming a default surface, and the companies that own the underlying platform are racing to keep that surface in-house rather than ceding it to a phone OS.
For Rivian, the assistant is less about a single feature and more about defending the thesis that an automaker can credibly own its software layer end-to-end. If Connect+ retention holds and the assistant works reliably across a fleet that stretches back to 2024 hardware, Volkswagen's $5 billion bet looks better, and the no-CarPlay decision starts to look like product strategy rather than a gap in the spec sheet.
