YouTube tests Ask YouTube, an AI search that mixes text with video results

The opt-in feature returns step-by-step guides with embedded clips, available first to U.S. Premium subscribers aged 18 and over.

YouTube began testing Ask YouTube on April 28, 2026, an AI-powered search feature that returns step-by-step guides built from a mix of text, short videos, and longer clips rather than the standard list of video thumbnails. The opt-in experiment is limited to U.S. Premium subscribers aged 18 or older, who can enroll through a dedicated URL. Google said it is working to extend the feature to non-Premium users.

The pitch is closer to a chatbot than a search box. A query like "plan a 3-day road trip from San Francisco to Santa Barbara" returns an itinerary stitched from creator footage, with titles and channel attribution attached to each segment. Users can then ask follow-ups in the same thread, such as "Where can I get good coffee?", and get suggestions formatted the same way.

YouTube frames the discovery angle as a feature, not a bug. Surfacing specific video segments with channel details is meant to push viewers toward creators they would not have found through ranked results alone. Whether that holds up once sponsored placements enter the mix is the open question.

Key facts

  • 01YouTube launched an opt-in test of Ask YouTube on April 28, 2026, blending text answers with short and long video segments.
  • 02The feature is limited to U.S. Premium subscribers aged 18 and older, with Google saying non-Premium access is in the works.
  • 03Sample queries include planning a 3-day road trip from San Francisco to Santa Barbara and follow-ups like 'Where can I get good coffee?'
  • 04Google introduced its AI Mode last year and added side-by-side browsing, price exploration, and Gemini's Canvas projects this year.

The feature is the latest extension of Google's AI Mode, which the company introduced last year as a way to handle multi-part questions and follow-ups inside Search. Google has spent 2026 layering more capability on top of that surface — side-by-side web browsing and product price exploration earlier in the year, and Gemini's Canvas feature for maintaining projects inside AI Mode last month.

Ask YouTube turns a query like a 3-day road trip from San Francisco to Santa Barbara into a step-by-step guide stitched from text, short clips, and longer videos.

Pushing the same pattern into YouTube is the bigger move. YouTube is one of the most heavily used search engines on the internet in its own right, particularly for how-to content, recipes, and travel planning — exactly the verticals where a guided answer beats a ranked list of ten-minute videos.

It also gives Google a defensive position. ChatGPT, Perplexity, and other answer engines have eaten into traditional web search by collapsing research into a single response. YouTube's library of creator video is the one corpus those rivals cannot easily replicate, and Ask YouTube is an attempt to wrap that corpus in the same conversational interface users now expect.

The economics for creators are unsettled. If Ask YouTube routes a viewer to a 20-second clip pulled from a 15-minute video, the creator's watch time, mid-roll ad inventory, and end-screen click-throughs all take a hit. Google has not detailed how monetization or analytics will work for segments surfaced through the AI feature.

There is also the question of what "sponsored placements" eventually look like inside an AI-generated itinerary. TechCrunch noted Google could later surface different kinds of videos alongside paid spots, which is a polite way of saying the answer column will become ad inventory once the feature scales beyond the Premium test pool.

The 18-and-over gate and U.S.-only limit suggest Google is wary of the same hallucination and safety issues that have dogged AI Overviews in regular Search. Travel planning is forgiving; medical or legal queries built from creator footage are not. Keeping the test small lets Google tune the model before opening the door to a larger audience.

Skeptics will point out that Google has shipped and quietly retired plenty of YouTube experiments, and that AI Mode itself is still finding its shape a year after launch. The bigger risk is creator backlash if Ask YouTube routes attention away from full videos without a clear revenue share, a fight Google has had before with clips, Shorts, and Search snippets.

If Ask YouTube graduates from experiment to default, it changes what YouTube is. The product stops being a video site you search and becomes an answer engine that happens to use video as its primary medium. That is a meaningful repositioning for a platform that has spent 20 years training users to scroll a grid of thumbnails, and it puts YouTube — not Search — at the center of how Google plans to defend its query volume against the next wave of AI-native rivals.
