It transcribes your recording, then lets you edit the media by editing the text: delete a sentence from the transcript and the corresponding audio and video disappear. Remove every 'um' in the file with one action. Rearrange sections by moving paragraphs. For anyone who has scrubbed a timeline hunting for a breath to cut, the productivity difference is not incremental.

Around that sit features that would each be a product elsewhere. Studio Sound cleans up bad recordings — room echo, hum, uneven levels — well enough that a laptop microphone in an untreated room becomes publishable. Overdub clones your voice so you can fix a misspoken word by typing the correct one, with consent verification required before it will clone. Filler-word removal, eye-contact correction and automatic multicam switching handle the chores of talking-head production.

The limitation is scope. Descript is built for dialogue: podcasts, interviews, tutorials, course material, YouTube explainers. Narrative editing, music-driven cutting, colour grading and anything requiring frame-accurate craft belong in Premiere or Resolve. Trying to make Descript into a general video editor is where people become frustrated with it.

Pricing runs from a limited free tier through creator and pro subscriptions gated on transcription hours and feature access. It suits podcasters, course creators and internal communications teams. It is not a replacement for a timeline editor.

Collaboration is real-time with end-to-end encryption, and there is no account required for basic use — open the page and start drawing.

The AI feature converts a text description into an Excalidraw diagram, and it produces editable native shapes rather than an image, so you correct what it gets wrong instead of regenerating. It handles Mermaid syntax too, which makes it a convenient way to turn documentation diagrams into something you can edit visually. It is a useful accelerator, not a headline capability.

The relevant decision is in a Slack thread from March, the spec is in Drive under a filename nobody remembers, the ticket is in Jira, the context is in an email. Glean indexes across all of it and answers questions in natural language, with citations back to the source.

The technically hard part is permissions. Enterprise search is worthless if it surfaces documents the asker is not entitled to see, and worse than worthless if it leaks a compensation review into a general query. Glean mirrors the access controls of every system it indexes, so two employees asking the same question get different answers according to what each may see. Getting that right across a dozen products with different permission models is most of the engineering.

It also builds a knowledge graph over people and projects, which improves relevance — the same query means something different depending on which team you are on — and doubles as an internal directory of who works on what.

Pricing is enterprise, quote-only, and the company does not publish rates. Realistically this is a tool for organisations of hundreds or thousands of employees, where the aggregate hours lost to searching justify the contract. Below that scale the problem usually is not expensive enough to solve this way.

Miro AI addresses the specific chores of that work. It clusters hundreds of sticky notes into themes after a brainstorm — the tedious part of every workshop, usually done by one person afterwards. It summarises a sprawling board into readable text. It generates diagrams, mind maps and code from prompts, and expands a rough idea into structured content. None of it is a reason to choose Miro; all of it removes work you would otherwise do manually.

The clustering is the most genuinely useful of these, because affinity mapping is real cognitive labour and the AI version is fast enough to iterate on. It is also imperfect, and reviewing its groupings is part of the job rather than optional.

Pricing runs from a limited free tier through team and enterprise plans, with AI features and board limits gated by tier. It suits any distributed team running collaborative sessions. It is not a diagramming tool in Lucidchart's sense and not a design tool in Figma's — the canvas is for thinking together, not for producing precise artefacts.

Those connections are why enterprises pay for it rather than using something free.

The AI features generate diagrams from a text prompt, produce them from imported datasets, and summarise or explain existing diagrams. They are a useful first-draft accelerator. A prompted diagram gets structure roughly right and needs manual correction, which is the normal state of this technology and a reasonable division of labour.

Because it can address the doc's data model, it does things a text-only assistant cannot.

The pricing model is unusual and worth understanding before committing. Coda charges per Doc Maker — people who create and edit doc structure — while viewers and commenters are free. For an organisation where a handful of people build tools that many people use, that is dramatically cheaper than per-seat pricing. For a team where everyone edits, it is not.

The main competitor is Notion, which has more users, better templates and a more polished interface. When it works, it is genuinely pleasant. Writing about a project surfaces the meeting note from six weeks ago that you had forgotten. Asking a question in natural language returns an answer assembled from across your own notes rather than a list of files to open. The Mem Chat interface treats your accumulated writing as a knowledge base to be queried.

Two things temper it. The first is that automatic organisation is probabilistic — when the right note surfaces it feels like magic, and when it does not you have no folder to fall back on. Users with a strong mental model of their own material sometimes find the loss of explicit structure disorienting rather than liberating.

The second is privacy. Making sense of your notes requires processing them, which means personal writing lives on a server and is analysed there. Obsidian, which keeps everything in local Markdown files, is the direct counter-argument for anyone who cares about that. Pricing is subscription with a free tier, and the company has been opaque about rates. It suits fast, messy capture. It suits deliberate knowledge architecture less well.
