Runtway started in 2018 as an AI video research lab and has evolved into the most-used professional AI video tool. The product offers text-to-video and image-to-video generation, motion capture (Act-Two), reference-image conditioning, and a non-linear editor where you can assemble, trim, and color-correct generated clips without exporting.

Runway is the AI video tool that real film studios use. Lionsgate has an exclusive deal with Runway. A24 has used it on multiple films. Madonna's recent tour visuals were generated in Runway. The product has earned its position at the top end of the market.

Gen-4 is Runway's latest video model, released in 2025. Compared to Gen-3 (which itself was a major step up), Gen-4 produces:

• Better motion coherence — limbs don't dissolve, objects maintain consistent appearance across frames
• Stronger prompt adherence — Gen-4 actually follows the prompt rather than producing 'AI video that vaguely matches the vibe'
• Improved character consistency — reference-image conditioning produces the same character across multiple shots
• Longer max clip length — up to 16 seconds at high quality, longer at standard quality

Quality is approaching short-film grade for many use cases. It's not yet at Veo 3 or Sora 2 levels for the absolute hardest shots, but it's competitive and tight workflow integration makes it the right pick for most production work.

Act-Two is the most genuinely impressive feature in any AI video product. You record yourself (or an actor) performing a scene with a single camera. Runway captures the full body motion and maps it onto a generated character — which can be a stylized cartoon, a different person, or any visual concept you can describe.

For indie animators, music video producers, and game-asset creators, Act-Two has lowered the barrier to motion capture from $50K studio rentals to a $35/month subscription. The output is good enough for production use on shorter projects.

Most AI video tools generate a clip and dump it on you. Runway has a built-in editor where you can trim, sequence, color-correct, add audio, and assemble a full short film without exporting to Premiere or DaVinci. For anyone iterating on AI video, this is transformative — you stay in the same tool from concept to final cut.

The editor is not as deep as DaVinci Resolve or Premiere, but it's deep enough for the 80% case. Creators producing short-form content (music videos, ads, social clips) can finish entirely in Runway.

Runway uses a credit-based model that gets expensive at scale. The free tier (125 credits) is enough for evaluation. Standard at $15/month (625 credits) is right for hobbyists and freelancers. Pro at $35/month (2,250 credits) is the right tier for working creators. Unlimited at $95/month opens the floodgates with unlimited Explore-mode generations.

For production studios doing high volumes of generation, the Enterprise tier with custom credit packages is the only economically sensible option.

Veo 3 sometimes produces better raw quality, particularly on complex motion. Sora 2 has the edge on long, single-shot complexity. For the absolute highest-quality individual shot, Runway is occasionally not the best choice.

Camera control is better than it was but still not as precise as you'd want for traditional VFX work. If you need exact camera moves matching a previs, Runway's controls feel approximate.

Iteration speed is slow — high-quality Gen-4 renders take 1-3 minutes each. For idea exploration, this friction is real.

Runway is the AI video tool to use if you're actually trying to finish projects. The combination of Gen-4 quality, Act-Two motion capture, and the built-in editor makes it the most complete production workflow in the category.
