Google AI Overviews now appear in 43% of searches, up from 15% a year ago, according to a new report from market intelligence firm Similarweb. Visits to Google AI Mode, the company's more conversational search surface, rose from 126 million in June 2025 to 279 million by May 2026 — a 121% jump in eleven months. The data marks the clearest sign yet that AI-generated answers have moved from a bolt-on feature to the default search experience for a large share of Google's traffic.

The shift matters because it changes what Google is. For two decades, the product was a list of blue links pointing users elsewhere. Now Google itself is increasingly the destination, synthesizing answers from the sites it indexes and keeping users on its own surface. Similarweb's data shows average search query length has risen over the past year, consistent with users typing longer, more conversational prompts designed for AI rather than short keyword strings.

The user journey has also changed shape. AI Overviews now function as an entry point into AI Mode, letting people start with a synthesized answer and continue researching through follow-up questions without ever leaving Google. That flow lengthens session time on Google's own properties at the direct expense of the open web, which historically depended on Google as a referral engine.

Key facts

  • 01Google AI Overviews now surface in 43% of searches, up from 15% a year earlier, per Similarweb.
  • 02Google AI Mode visits climbed from 126 million in June 2025 to 279 million by May 2026.
  • 03AI responses with citations rose more than 5x over the past year, though only 6.8% of U.S. ChatGPT desktop queries carried citations in May 2026.
  • 04ChatGPT desktop referrals to webpages jumped from 25% in March 2026 to 60% by May 30, 2026, after a May 7 search update.

Publishers are on the losing end of the arithmetic. AI citations have risen more than fivefold in the past year across the AI search category, according to Similarweb, but a citation is not a click. The links inside AI Overviews and AI Mode compete for attention with a fully-formed answer sitting directly above them, and many users never scroll past the synthesis. Referral traffic to news publishers in particular has been hit hard by the pattern.

Cloudflare has moved to give publishers a lever. The infrastructure company introduced tools that let sites block AI crawlers unless the AI company pays for access through its marketplace, an attempt to convert scraped training and retrieval traffic into a paid content channel. Whether that model scales depends on how many AI providers agree to pay versus route around the block.

ChatGPT's citation behavior looks different from Google's. Just 6.8% of U.S. ChatGPT desktop queries included citations as of May 2026, per Similarweb, well below where Google's citation rate now sits. Travel, retail, and sports queries generate cited responses more often than the average, suggesting citation rates track how commercially load-bearing the answer is rather than being a uniform product decision.

There is one bright spot for the open web. ChatGPT desktop referrals to external pages more than doubled after a May 7 search update, with the share of visits landing on webpages rising from 25% in March 2026 to nearly 60% by May 30, 2026. When the blue links are made more prominent inside an AI answer, users click them. The design choice, not the underlying technology, drives whether referral traffic survives.

The counterweight to this shift is that publishers still have some cards. Cloudflare's crawler-blocking marketplace, licensing deals directly with model providers, and the ChatGPT referral rebound all suggest that the flow of traffic from AI search back to source sites is a variable, not a fixed decline. But the direction of travel on Google's own product is unambiguous: more AI, more time on Google, fewer outbound clicks per query.

For the AI search market, the Similarweb numbers reset the stakes. Google is not defending its search franchise against ChatGPT so much as reinventing the franchise on top of AI, and the 43% AI Overviews rate suggests the retrofit is working at scale. The open question is what happens to the content ecosystem that Google's index has always depended on. If the sites that produce the answers can't monetize the traffic Google no longer sends them, the source material AI Overviews are built from starts to thin — and that is a problem Google will eventually have to price in, either through licensing, revenue share, or a materially different referral posture than the one this data captures.
