Anthropic has hired Theo Hourmouzis as General Manager of Australia and New Zealand and officially opened its Sydney office, the company said on April 27. Hourmouzis joins from Snowflake, where he most recently served as Senior Vice President for Australia, New Zealand and ASEAN. He brings more than 20 years of leadership experience across Asia Pacific to the role.
Sydney is Anthropic's latest international outpost, following recent openings in Tokyo and Bengaluru and a planned launch in Seoul. The expansion gives Anthropic a permanent local team to sell Claude into enterprise and public sector accounts in a region where it has so far operated remotely.
Hourmouzis will meet customers and partners in Sydney this week alongside executives from Anthropic's global team. His remit is to build out the local headcount and shape a go-to-market strategy specifically for Australian and New Zealand customers, rather than treating ANZ as a satellite of a larger Asia Pacific region.
Key facts
- 01Anthropic named Theo Hourmouzis General Manager of Australia and New Zealand on April 27, 2026.
- 02Hourmouzis joins from Snowflake, where he ran Australia, New Zealand and ASEAN as SVP, with 20+ years in Asia Pacific tech.
- 03Anthropic officially opened its Sydney office, following recent launches in Tokyo and Bengaluru and ahead of Seoul.
- 04Local customers include Commonwealth Bank, Quantium, Canva and Xero, the latter two via a multi-year partnership.
- 05YMCA South Australia, with 65+ locations and around 1,250 staff, is an early Claude for Nonprofits partner.
The named customer list anchoring the launch includes Commonwealth Bank and Quantium on the enterprise side, plus a research roster of the Australian National University, Murdoch Children's Research Institute, Garvan Institute of Medical Research, and Curtin University under Anthropic's AI for Science program. Anthropic also pointed to a memorandum of understanding it recently signed with the Australian government as a backbone of the regional strategy.

"Organizations across Australia and New Zealand are thinking carefully about how to adopt AI, and they want partners who take safety and rigor as seriously as they take the opportunity," Hourmouzis said in Anthropic's announcement. "That's what drew me to Anthropic. I've spent my career working with businesses and governments across this region, and the organizations that do best with AI will be the ones that pair ambition with discipline."
Anthropic is also leaning on two of Australia's most recognizable software exports to anchor distribution. Canva will fold its Canva Design Engine and Visual Suite into the newly launched Claude Design by Anthropic Labs. A separate multi-year partnership with Xero will bring Claude into the accounting platform and pipe Xero's financial data and tools back into Claude.ai.
On the nonprofit side, YMCA South Australia is an early Claude for Nonprofits partner. The organization runs 65+ community locations with around 1,250 staff and has used Claude to build custom AI skills that turn operational data into reports, cut branded content production from hours to minutes, and bring technical work in-house that previously required external contractors.
"The future for us is about Claude becoming embedded infrastructure, a core part of how we run the organisation," said Devan Seamans, Head of Marketing & Technology at YMCA South Australia. He framed the choice as one driven by enterprise governance controls rather than headline model quality, a recurring theme in Anthropic's pitch to regulated buyers.
Chris Ciauri, Anthropic Managing Director of International, said the appointment "reflects the conviction we share with the Australian government that AI can drive economic growth when it's developed and deployed responsibly." Ciauri added that Hourmouzis would build the team and partnerships needed to support customers across the region "for the long term."
The skeptical read is that Anthropic is opening a Sydney office into a market where OpenAI, Google, and Microsoft already have entrenched enterprise relationships and local cloud regions. ANZ is a small slice of global software spend, and Snowflake's regional playbook — which Hourmouzis ran — depended heavily on hyperscaler partnerships Anthropic is still building out locally.
Still, the move fits a broader pattern. Anthropic is methodically planting flags in the markets where governments are writing AI procurement rules now, with Tokyo, Bengaluru, Sydney, and Seoul all landing inside roughly a year. For ANZ buyers, the signal is that Claude has a local throat to choke; for Anthropic, it's a way to convert MOUs and pilots into recurring enterprise revenue before its rivals lock the region down.
